What is sevin dust?

Okay, I read about this stuff online and here, and I just have a few questions. Is it safe for chickens??? Can it be used in a dusting pan for the chickens on a daily basis for pest control, or only to get rid of an existing problem? Can I eat eggs from a chicken dusted in this stuff??? Can I use it in their bedding as a preventative measure??? Thanks!!!

Sevin is a highly toxic chemical pesticide and has been banned here. Don't know about the rest of the USA. There are many other opptions if you do a little research.

You can still by sevin dust around here. Sevin dust is a strong pesticide, we use it sometimes. But we have never used sevin dust on a animal.

If you want to treat your flock for mites or worms you can buy DE (Diatomaceous Earth) which is a natural pesticide.

I've heard that some people still have problems with lice and mites even when using DE. Is this a problem anyone has run into????

Nope! I just fling the stuff all over everything and everybody. No problems with flies, fleas, lice or any other nasty.

sedven dust is labeled for use on dogs .So it must not be to bad

Sevin dust has the active ingredient Carbaryl. Toxicity to avian and mammalian species is relatively low. It is one of the "safer" man-made garden pesticides. Used to be a very common ingredient in flea powder, may still be. Particularly effective on beetles, including Japanese Beetles, and cabbage loopers and other "worms". It could be used to address an acute immediate problem. Not sure it is labelled for that though. I certainly would not recommend it as a pest control plan.

It is also horribly toxic to all bees.

I use food grade DE on everything and everyone. Dogs, cats, carpets, yard, chickens, coops, under the house, you name it and I feel very comfortable doing it. If you still have a problem with mites, maybe you should have a coop deep clean and try all new bedding material and putting some of the DE in one of the 'dust tubs' they make for themselves.
