What is the Darkest Red Chicken Breed?

OK, I know there are a lot of red chickens out there. My guess for the darkest, deepest red color would be the Heritage Rhode Island Red. I think they call them mahogany red. I also saw a lot of Partridge Plymouth Rocks come up when I did an image search. And of course, there are a lot of other, paler red chicken breeds. Anybody want to post photos of their most beautiful deep red chickens? Are there any other contenders for deepest red chicken? We could get some nice "chicken coveting" going here!

If you were to look at exhibition type Rhode Island Reds you will find the darkest reds. The "heritage" moniker doesn't make them dark. Most "heritage" bird are still poorly colored and/or marked. You have to find breeders that are selecting for those qualities.

Oh, that makes sense. I thought the heritage breeders were working on color, too, as well as preserving the breed.

Nonsense posted on the internet by folks using photos to sell chicks of birds that are not even the parent stock of the chicks you'd get? Bothersome to say the least.

Looking at pictures and internet photos all day day, all life long, is no substitute for seeing the real things with your own eyes. It's a pity people have never seen a real, bred to standard RI Red, or Dark Cornish, or Buckeye, or Partridge Rock, etc. They'd simply blow you away.

I happen to like looking at photos of pretty birds, and I think a lot people enjoy showing theirs off. Plus, I really would like to know if there are other red breeds out there I might not have heard of. And there don't happen to be any shows right now...

This site is the best way to track any poultry shows coming up. There are outstanding shows in Indiana and in nearby Ohio this year. A good good number. Heck, might even be at one of them myself if the planets line up. Who knows? Might even have a few of those "Dark Red Birds" to exhibit myself.

Thank you! I've been counting the weeks until April, because I think that's when the next coming up show is going to be.

Maybe I will see you there. Where is "Up North"? I am from Detroit, so to me, Up North means anything further up than Lansing. I have been living down here "south of the border" for 10 years now.
