What is the dosage for fenbendazole?

Kathy is the math whiz, she can figure it out lol. I'm not into the mg/kg stuff. I keep it simple using the liquid goat wormer: 1ml for giants, 3/4ml for large fowl, 1/2cc for standards, 1/4cc for small birds. Yeah I know, ml and cc are the same. No problem.

I'm with you. With all the other variances in giving chickens anything, I do the best I can. That dosage label says 10-50 mg/kg. That's a pretty wide area of dosages. What's with that?????????

It depends on the parasite it's being used against, the species you're using it for and the length of treatment as well as special conditions of the patient. One of the tested and now approved uses for fenbendazole for dogs is giving it during pregnancy from day 40 to 2 days post whelp. This has a very high rate (99%) of giving you worm free puppies, something very difficult to achieve prior as some parasites can encyst or go inactive and dewormers don't touch them.

I tried to get a prescription from a vet so I could worm the mother but I suspect they would rather refuse (which they did) so I would be forced to bring in all of the puppies and be charged to worm each one, plus office visit per puppy!

It may have to do with the labeling on the product their distributor sends to them. If it's companion animal (dog, cat) product they're supposed to have a recent (1year?) client, patient, doctor relationship. If you go to the farm store and pick it up yourself for your dog, they're not supposed to tell you unlabeled directions. That's using a product not in accordance with it's labeling. FYI puppies are given a different dose of fenbendazole than adults and unless you give it continuously while she's pregnant, using it on a pregnant dog does very little for the pups.

We are not supposed to tell you either. Luckily FDA etc aren't worrying about us yet. Well until killing pests comes up or resistance to antimicrobials. Then there may be some letters and court cases. Eventually.

The fenbendazole that the small animal vet has is called Panacur and it's prescription only even though it's the *exact* same thing as Safeguard.

Here is more info on fenbendazole.

Hi dawg53 and Kathy,

I know you guys have discussed this numerous times on numerous sites. And I apologize if it's becoming annoying.

Twenty of my 23 hens were rescued from a hoarder. Trying to individually medicate each one would be the equivalent to medicating 20 feral cats. Essentially impossible....even in a dark coop at night. They still freak out when I slowly enter their coop at night.
I noticed one roundworm Sat as I was cleaning the run, which I do obsessively several times a day. I dosed them with Safe-guard 3cc/gal for 3 days, stirring the bowls throughout the day. The morning after the second medication day, I found dead roundworms in almost every pile of overnight poop on the poopboard. (Made me feel guilty.) I plan to re-medicate in 10 days.

Do you know where one can purchase Panacur Aquasol? It always seems like the US needs to do a million studies on a medication that has been researched previously a million times in other countries. So I'm not sure that Panacur Aquasol is available in the US. Or if it even matters, since the Safe-Guard was obviously effective.

One study also suggested not to medicate during molting or nesting. Well, that's also essentially impossible as they're either doing one or the other or both. If we can locate the Panacur Aquasol we also need to be aware that it is a 20% solution, double the concentration of Safe-guard at 10%.

I give fenbendazole during molt and during breeding season and have not seen any sides effect doing it. Not saying everyone should do it, just that I have and haven't had any problems with it.

Do you use Safe-guard as I did?

Yes, I use Safeguard liquid or paste and I use way more than you do - My average sized hens will get 1.2ml if I'm treating for just roundworms and cecal worms. For capillary worms they get that amount five days in a row.
