I have the strangest cold.....no sore throat, no stuffy nose, just a MISERABLE, persistant cough that is keeping me up at night for the last three days (our kids have the more traditional form of the cold - so I'm sure my immune system is fighting off most of the virus).

And now, compliments of all the morons who abuse otc meds - you can't get anything that works!!!!

What is the most effective cough medicine you've used recently????

OTC cough med Delsym is probably the most effective (like a long acting Robitussin DM). Or Mucinex DM with the cough suppressant. RX med is probably Tussionex, but it has hydrocodone in it and is prescription only, like liquid Vicodin. Nyquil is pretty effective as it has alcohol and an antihistamine that usually makes you sleepy, and if you are asleep, you don't cough.

My personal favorite is a Benadryl and a shot of Jack Daniels.

If your cough lasts more than 2 weeks, should get a chest x-ray and see your doctor or acute care clinic.

Alright...Delsym it is. I'm going to run and pick some up at CVS right now.

They took the alcohol OUT of Nyquil....so it's now pretty useless. Last night I took 100mg of Benedryl to help me get through the night, but it didn't work....it was a very frustrating night!!

Maybe a glass of wine, benedryl, AND delsym will help tonight! I'll check with the pharmacist to make sure I can take the benedryl & delsym together - as miserable as I am, I still want to wake up in the morning!

Thanks, guys!

I manage a 5 physician medical practice....so I can get a CXR if I need one (I do have a strong hx of developing pneumonia after a virus)....I hope this doesn't head down that road...What a pain.
