I'm very superficial, all about looks. I'm kidding but I have 3 hens (2 are 3 months old) 1 around a year, and I can not remember if they were RI or NH, or both or what. Ive looked into this and been reading and the difference seems pretty much inconsequential. But is there a way you can determine by looking at them? Im not concerned with behavior and egg laying etc. Even the pictures Im looking at i cant tell. both breeds have pics that seem different and then others that look identical to the chickens I have. I am not asking the community to tell me what I have I am asking if you are aware of any distinct physical differences that would help identify one way or the other. If you need a picture, please just dont respond because its dark and I dont feel like taking one, and that is not my question. So far I have not read anything specific enough to help me clarify. It seems the two breeds are very closely related anyways and one came from the other, i forget which... but if you can help, and be polite, positive, and move the conversation forward I would love your input. This is my post, if you can not do these things, please please feel free to move on to the next posting. Anyone nice enough to help and contribute, would be very appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.

Rhode Island Reds are the origin breed. They are deep red. They are long and brick-shaped and dual purpose, but many are focused on egg laying.
New Hampshire Reds were selected from Rhode Island Reds for meat. They are an orange color. They aren’t so long-bodied.

None of that matters though because hatchery birds aren’t bred to the Standard of Perfection and that means the line between the breeds is very blurry since neither has correct conformation or coloring.
It doesn’t matter what breed you have, anyway. Most hatchery birds are similar when it comes to behavior and productivity regardless of “breed.”
