My chicken pick on each other often and such but I noticed these two hens had these black faces and I did not notice it earlier in the week. The blackened face appeared quickly. There was a freeze so, I can’t pinpoint exactly what this can be- frost bite, fighting, dirty, blackhead. Two of my hens have these and they were not together; same house separate blocked/contained areas. As for my Roos, they always have some picking injuries so, I always see black spots on them and when I observe the spots, they look like dry blood. The spotted hen was with a white one.. she has no signs of the black spots or smears on her. The other chickens that were with the gray hen have no black spots or anything. So, I am confused. Why do you all think? I feared frostbite on the spotted hen and so I placed her with the other hens, body heat and off the floor. I hope That wasn’t a mistake????? Please look at the photos and let me know your thoughts.

Generally Wyandotte don't get frostbite. I'm not sure if that's frostbite or pecking wounds. Since it's similar in all the birds I might think frostbite. What type of waterer are you using? Is your coop well ventilated?

If you see pecking than I would guess it's wounds. Pecking in general can be from crowding, or a low protein diet. Sharing a bit more about how you are keeping them might help to determine what's going on.

The Wyandotte (Ash) was with one other bird (leghorn), Ash was the alpha. The gray bird (Lavender Orpington), is up in the totem poll she’s never been bullied and loves food! They both eat well, are not sluggish, but kinda have me concerned with the black on their face. They all drink from a heated dog bowl. I have tried using others chicken waters but the weather freezes them. So I have resorted to dog bowls.
