What kind of snake is this? (*PICS*)

rat snake.......you can call them chicken snakes because they like to hang out around chicken coops, barns, etc, ....anywhere they can catch a rat...or maybe an egg,\\. They like to bite and don't make very nice pets.

definitely looks like a type of rat snake. we have them around here. they are generally not very friendly, but the bite is harmless. we do have a 4 foot+ black snake that lives near the house. we welcome him. he also will eat any rodent it can catch also will eat other snakes, even small rattlers. i have seen this particular black snake for a few years now. it will stay away from the back yard where our dogs are as will most snakes. since it has been around i have not seen any more snakes or rodents around. i know it will not go after the chickens and i doubt my eggs are in any danger either since the dogs run the perimeter of the coop and run.

I applaud those who welcome that kinda snake but snakes will NEVER be welcomed at my house. If someone FAR from me wants that kinda snake, I don't mind trapping it and re-locating it somewhere else, but he could never be an occupant in my yard.

As far as the rats, etc. I have feral cats that take care of all of the unwanted pesky creatures that come onto the property. See pics below.

I never reached into a nest and grabbed a snake, but I did open a mailbox one time and a timber rattler struck at me. That's a big time violation of the mailman mail customer relationship by the way. Needless to say I threw their mail up in the air as I screamed like a girl and sped off. It was a real day changer for sure. Had to burn my entire outfit and fumigate the jeep as well.

killed another chicken about 30 minutes ago, up in one of my egg boxes, under the wheat straw. i had some 2 week old peepers in there, all of them their last night, but one was missing today. i figured it was another chicken snake, and took a cut-off hoe and pulled the straw back in the boxes, there he was. needless that peeper-eater had his last meal, on me, last night.

i've been plagued with darn chicken snakes this year, i've had 6 this year. best i can figure, they come in during the day, while i have the chickens out, with the door propped open for the girls to return to lay. either that, or they are climbing some nearby trees and coming through the chicken wire roof of a 10'x16' yard, and going into the hen house. there is 37'' high steel roofing panels on three sides, and the wire section of the yard has 1/2x1/2'' hardware cloth on it, 36'' high with 2 layers of chicken wire above. the snakes were not a huge problem, until the biddies showed up. i ain't tolerating stupid snakes eating my peepers. i spent about 2 hours building, and installing a 36'' half door, with the plan of opening the big door and letting the girls fly in and out over it. my chickens are too stupid to do this though, so i'm back to leaving an open door during the day.
