What Mug Are You Using Today?

Another story from my childhood. My mom’s every day dishes were Currier and Ives (from Royal China). Her theme was basically Early American in red, white and blue. She had a hideous wallpaper in the dining room with eagles holding arrows in their feet! And these dishes that she collected from the grocery store.

They were pretty battered and beat up eventually and then she switched to Corelle. But there was always some of the Currier and Ives left. I took some when I got married, and over the years I found some more at garage sales. But I hadn’t known there were extra pieces. All I’d ever seen were the regular place setting pieces and one large platter. Also teacups and saucers.

Eventually (once there was an internet) I discovered that there were tons of different pieces with collectors and a national collectors club and books about them! So I began collecting them more seriously. Now I own just about all the pieces I’m interested in, except I’d like to build up to 12 place settings and I’m short on a few of the harder to find bowls.

So today’s mug is one of my more recent additions:

Tomorrow will be the matching teacup and saucer.

A pretty display of china! Do you use the dishware on special occasions?

For a while I was using them for Christmas brunch. That was really pretty with everything blue and white. I had a pale blue and white plaid tablecloth then.

I will grab some of that stuff out randomly when I think about it. Mostly though I use a few of my older chipped or cracked pieces on a regular basis. And there are several 10” pie plates that I use a lot. But I discovered that using the pie plates caused some staining and crazing. So I was able to find replacement pie plates for those, and now I keep the perfect ones for display only and use the heck out of my imperfect ones. 😁
