Oh my gosh, that picture of the lil' guy on the blue background is so precious. I'm going to start taking a picture or two of this one every couple days. I've seen some pictures on the web of sable point kits that start out like that and grow into it, and now I'm also thinking it looks like some of the other stuff I've seen. The more I look, the more confused I get. I love genetics, but the color changing horse of a different color is making me wanna bang my head on a wall. According to the generator, it could only be one of those two things at that color. Mom was a sable point, dad was a tort.

Bitterroot, I agree that that bun looks awfully dark for a Sable Point - looks more like a (Siamese) Sable to me. But, since Sable Point and Tort are both non-extension colors, it does make me wonder if the mother was correctly identified as a Sable Point, since the only possible results should also be non-extension colors.

inthesticks, your bun looks like a Smoke Pearl (one of my all-time favorite colors!)

I hope this is the right place to ask. My daughter is desperately wanting a rabbit. Hubby and I each had a rabbit when we were kids. Mine was given to my dad after a family funeral. Apparently the rabbit lover died so he brought a rabbit home with us totally unprepared. I want to be prepared this time.

What breeds are good choices with kids? My kids are 3 and 6 and I know they will need to be supervised at all times with the rabbit (or rabbits).

How many should I get? Are they social like goats, so I need more than one?

Where do I find a good rabbit? The feed store has adorable rabbits of unspecified breeds.

Thanks, rabbit gurus.

Don't get your rabbit a partner... It is more likely to cause problems then work out. Maybe you should get two rabbits, in two different cages? One for each child? Here are the breeds I recommend:
Holland Lop
Havana
Jersey Wooly (if your willing to spend a little more time grooming)
American Fuzzy Lop (same thing with the grooming, but they are even better than Holland Lops IMO)
Polish (tiny, some can be a bit jumpy)
Mini Satins
Himalayans

Now, many people recommend Mini Rexes, I however beg to differ... I have had a horrid experience with my MR. He bites any chance he gets, he attacks your ankles, and is overall a high strung, off the wall rabbit. I can barely touch him, and i only touch him to clean his cage, or let him play in the yard. I have heard reports of other Minis doing this, and I know many hyper Minis. If you really want a breed like this, the full sized Rexes are extremely calm and sweet, however they weigh about 11 pounds.

If you want to see these breeds and learn about the other breeds, I highly suggest visiting the ARBA website.

I'm curious about your hyper MR's, shadow rabbit. I've bred them for many years, and while I have had some that were a handful, some of the very sweetest rabbits I have ever had have been MR's. Some of my happiest customers are people that got MR's from me.

One thing I would warn anybody considering a Mini Rex about, is the claws. I don't know how it's possible, but they have the sharpest claws of any breed I have ever seen. You want to be extra diligent about regular claw clipping with MR's!

I have a gay American Silver Fox. A buddy of mine breeds them and this one wasn't interested in the females so he had to go. I saved him from the pot. At 12 pounds, he is the coolest little dude ever.

Would a picture of mom help? Thanks so much for your help. The flash kinda overexposed her, but she's a creamy color, though a bit smutty, with the darker points.

The person I got her from alternated between calling her a sable point, and a siamese sable. To me she looks closer to pictures I've seen of the points rather than the siamese, not that I really know anything though. Since I never got a pedigree for her, I have no idea what her genetic background is.

Looks a lot like her. And the more I look at baby pictures in some deeper google image search pages, the more I see that the little one I have is looking like a few others people are also calling siamese sable. It's definitely got a "ticked" appearance to it now.

The shaded gene (Light Chinchilla gene) is one of those genes that is partly temperature-dependent. How warm (or cool) the animal's skin is at the time the hair is growing will influence the amount of dark pigment in the hair. I once had a Siamese Sable Jersey Wooly doe that was a bit over-zealous in the matter of fur pulling. She'd start about 10 days before her litter was due, and by the time they arrived, she'd be almost completely bald, with just a little 2" "Mohawk" along her spine. He belly fur was often nearly black, much darker than her back!
