Whats the difference between a Yak and Highland Cattle?

Never eaten Yak, but Highland beef is the best I have ever tasted.

Me too!

They may not be as huge as the Angus but the landscape of Scotland is harsh and the smallness of size and hardiness makes up for the size. I think their temperment are easy going as they displayed well in fairs and festivals. Either they are used to the sounds of the hussle and bussle of things vs quiet farmland with limited exposure of humans.

And they are good mothers, as one breeder said.

What's the difference between Yaks and Highland cows??
From the responses so far, you can see the physical differences.
Yaks horns are more bicycle shaped than Highland's straighter horn set.
If you like the Highland meat, you will do cartwheels for the Yak's meat!!
Yak meat is the healthiest meat you can eat, bar none! And it is leaner with higher CLA's and Omega 3's than any other meat. Even though it is very lean, it is very juicy and tender, and never gamy.
Highlanders that have not been handled and trained under halter are quite spooky, and tend to be very flighty. Any animals, including Yaks and Highlanders tend to mellow out when halter trained and handled regularly. Yaks tend to be an alpha species by nature, meaning they want to be in charge. They will test their owners/handlers to see where they fit in the pecking order. Once we have established ourselves as being at the top of that pecking order, we are accepted as "the boss"; and challenges cease; and the Yaks are very easy to handle and are very calm and serene by nature.
Yaks are wonderful animals to raise and have everything to offer, from the finest meats, to the finest wool, to long hair that is very similar to human hair and is used for wigs, to a magnificent skull and horn set that can be used by artisans as outstanding decoration and wall art. I have raised both Highlanders and Yaks, and strongly prefer Yaks for their personalities as well as their products. I invite you to try our Yakmeat at www.yakmeat.us . You'll be glad you did!
YAKMAN

I want a yak. It would be cool. You could go on a trail ride, and if you got thirsty, you could stop and milk her and have a drink.

Unless I miss my guess, I do believe that milk can be made into a pretty potent alcoholic beverage.

Or just leave out the yak milk, or don't even bother to mix the two.

And then you just have a hangover.

Seriously. Well not too seriously.

I think many of the far Asian countries make a fermented milk beverage that is more potent than double rectified bust-head.

In Russia, I think it's kumiss, though I do believe that's made with mare's milk. I think they put a little bread and milk together and leave it til it's evolved.

Interesting. I could call it Yak Thunder Pale, I bet I could support us all to the remainder of our days.
