What's the temperature where you are???

Schools here work snow days into the schedule. And schools here go until end of June and start back up day after Labour Day.
We've always done the same thing, letting the youngsters out earlier if we didn't need all the days. After not needing them for a few years, our school board - in it's finite wisdom - decided to do away with built-in extra days, this year. Baaaaad Timing! I doubt it's a mistake they'll make again!

my apartment faces south and
I have the sun shining on that patch of grass in front of my apartment from sun rise to sunset

All that beautiful snow has melted away

There is still a lot of snow in shaded places

Lots of melted snow will freeze so we still have warnings

Your Police are right to warn about "black ice." The stuff's nearly invisible, especially on dark roadways. It doesn't even "glare;" like a puddle will, because the ice-slick's surface gets scuffed by other cars. With no way to treat the roads, your best bet is to sit tight. Be careful!

3:30 AM we were at 5 F by 4:30 it dropped to 3 F, now at 2:22 PM we're at a balmy 20F. Pass me the Coppertone!
If you were here, I actually COULD pass the sunscreen. I use last summer's leftovers as hand cream in the winter. It's comforting to get a whiff of "Beach" in the midst of all this cold!

Severe thunderstorms expected in the south-east as heatwave conditions persist

Temperatures are expected to remain high across much of Queensland today and tomorrow before a cooling trend kicks in for the south-east on the weekend.

Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Angus Hines said several thunderstorms are developing over the Gold Coast this morning with a risk of severe storms further inland with heavy rain, damaging winds, and large hail.

"The main threat for those severe storms is in the Eastern Downs and southern parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett as well," he said.

Danny Donald from Energex said the soaring heat has put strain on the energy grid and there could be more outages to come.

"Last night was a bit of a ripper. We did have at the peak about 13,500 [homes] out," he said.

Energex crews are still working to restore electricity to around 600 properties.

Severe heatwave conditions persist across much of the state with inland areas expect to reach the mid-40 degrees Celsius.

Spirit of the Outback train halted

Birdsville was the hottest town in Queensland yesterday, reaching 46.5 degrees.

Windorah reached 45.9C, Thargomindah reached 45.8C, and Longreach recorded 44.4C.

Spirit of the Outback train services from Emerald to Longreach were stopped as a precaution due to the heat.

A Queensland Rail spokesperson said extreme heat can cause track defects like buckling.

Passengers were instead transported via bus.

Birdsville park ranger and Wangkangurru and Yarluyandi elder Don Rowlands said work would not stop in the heat.

"Plenty of water, get as much shade as you can, and not to work outside as long as we used to do in the past," he said.
