There are aid stations all along the route that supply water and food and of course port-a-potties.

There is also a team of certified helpers called Bike Patrol who ride the route to provide mechanical aid, first aid, and moral support. Here are the cyclists at the starting line at dawn. You can see the Bike Patrol team member in her yellow jersey. The fire department also has emergency stations set up all along the route.

It can be pretty grueling! Since we're in the desert there are always some areas where the ground is too sandy to ride. Participants have to dismount and carry their bike (while running!) or just walk their bikes to the next point where they can ride again.

I checked out a few videos on this event ... amazing scenery.
