I have a pair of African geese.
He is 5 years old and she is less than a year old? They free range, eat scratch, layer crumbles, (same as the hens,) and slices of wheat bread for a snack. At night they are in the same chicken coop as my hens and roosters. Question is... when will she start laying and what type of container should a buy or prepare for her to encourage her to lay her eggs? I know I will probably will have to incubate the eggs, so I am also looking for an incubator that is reliable without being terribly expensive. Which brands do the professional recommend. I definitely do not want to turn the eggs by hand.
Thank you for the info ahead of time.

My Toulouse laid her first egg at 9 months old. I just give mine deep pine shavings they make their own nest. I did put up a partition out of some scrap plywood so she had some privacy. She may surprise you and go broody but most like to lay at least 8-9 eggs before they start. I will say this if you want her to go broody your best bet would be to give them their own house boy they get ornery during mating season and very protective of their goslings once they hatch.

I have 2 supposedly 9 mth old African geese raised from birth. One has been laying eggs at 7 months. Every day or every other day. That seems abnormal???? The other has a larger knob and hasn't laid yet? Could she be a he? We are in Iowa and it is freezing cold!! Geese are in a barn. Judy Cassen
