We had a predator incident and lost our favorite hen

I would like to have a couple of new ladies before the cold weather hits. Does anyone know a reliable place to buy hens in then Central NJ area? I am waiting to hear back from 4H but I am not sure they sell all of the time ( we originally got them at the fair...) thanks!

Been 46 years since I have been in central Jersey. If the Englishtown Farmers Market is still open I bet you can find what you want there. Almost any feed store will be able to put you in touch with someone wantng to sell chickens.

I bought chickens about a month ago from someone at Rosedale Mills in Pennington, NJ. Give them a call and ask to speak with John H. Mine are 6-7 weeks old now, but he also has some that would be 16 weeks and also some that are on organic feed.

P.S. I asked at the Hunterdon Co 4H fair, but all the hens were sold in the first couple days of the fair.

Good luck, and sorry about your loss.

esjro ~~ Thanks!! Your suggestion to call Rosedale Mills was great! We are on our way later today to pick up some new ladies to join our coop. What a great place and John was very nice on the phone. Can't wait to meet our new hens ~ thanks again!

It depends where in NJ you are, but definitely check out your local craigslist and keep an eye here. Unfortunately I usually sell out of all my stock at our county fair in august, but if you are still looking next summer I should have plenty of stuff to sell.

Also, depending on how far you are from Hackettstown, NJ there is an auction there that runs weekly. It's not the best auction, but they usually have some poultry for sale, along with a ton of pigeons and rabbits. That auction is every Tuesday and the poultry begins at 1:30. That's kind of a hit or miss thing, but if you are relatively close, it may be worth it to just go.

Also, there should be a BIG poultry show in the Fall at the Sussex County Fairgrounds. They usually have a HUGE selection of birds for sale. Check out the website for the fairgrounds and it should tell you the weekend. I think it is some time in October.

If you are looking for chicks, they still had some for sale at the Agway in New Egypt. For full size chickens, Graig's list seems to be a go to source, especially in eastern PA.
