I think the term retired hen holds true most places. Usually it means they are two years old and have passed their peak production. Most still lay eggs, just not enough for the commercial concerns to justify feeding and housing them. Given some of the red sex link breeds lay 300+ eggs a year if they layed half that in their third year they would probably outperform many heritage breeds.Interesting.
