Oregon
With the coop in build mode, I am now trying to find a good place to actually get my chicks. I have a name from someone who had cream legbars at the county fair that I really liked, but wanted a few other breeds as well.

I been trying to find close hatcheries and so far looks like Ideal may be the closest that has what I am looking for (Spitzhaubens and brabanters). I would also of course have to have a couple silkies because who can resist having atleast a couple of those cute things around! They were always the only chickens I could let visit my garden and wouldn't decimate it.

Anyone in around Oregon have any experience with hatcheries and good experiences with them? Maybe know of local breeders? Or even know if the feed stores carry chicks that aren't just the standard sex links?

Thanks!!

We bought our initial chicks from Wilco, but later got some Blue, Black, and Splash Orpingtons from a local breeder in the Philomath area. She puts Craigslist ads out in the spring for her chicks. They're pretty cool colors and not common (she wasn't very good at sexing the birds, however, as we wanted 6 hens, but 4 of them were roosters).

Lately we've bought birds from McMurray hatchery and had good experiences with having them shipped out to us.

Good luck to you!

Nice to know the chicks make it ok from McMurray! When I lived in Wyoming I had ordered from them and they were great. I was thinking of maybe seeing what they had at the spring Benton County fair as well, and maybe get some names for breeders of ones I am interested in. Have you ever gotten birds there?

I've not looked at getting chicks at the fair, though I know that there are plenty of breeders who sell there. Have you heard of the Oregon Poultry Swap? We just went to it last fall and it was pretty cool. Tons of birds for sale at all ages and a wide variety of breeds. Might be worth checking into (just Google Oregon Poultry Swap).

I like McMurray because they have a nice variety of birds and I can pick and choose from a bunch of breeds and have them all delivered at the same time. My pipe dream is to start my own breeding flock some day, but for now it's just eggs & meat.

I did manage to move up to Oregon in time for the fall Poultry/seed Swap at the Benton County fairgrounds, did get a name and info on a guy who had some very nice crested cream legbars. The next one won't be until April, but I did manage to get an order in with My Pet Chicken for some that I had wanted and Ideal for some my husband wanted, so not all what I had ouintinaly planned but will be a good starter crew for here, never had chickens in such wet climate, I was spoiled! Even though I have the chicks coming April 4th, I am still going to the next Poultry swap (just so look...is what I tell myself).

We got ours at Wilco. Dels in Philomath still has some chicks (free with purchase). My Wilco chicks are all happy and healthy (knock on wood).

Winn Farms in Corvallis has always been good to us. She also has an exchange program for certain breeds if you get a roo of that type. Jenks hatchery in Tangent has also come highly recommended to us, however they have what my son calls "boring" birds, aka dual purpose and egg layers but nothing flashy. He likes to be able to tell everyone apart, and being six he needs colors.

I had gotten some beautiful blue/lavender orps from a woman near Kingsvalley, but she has sold her flock and stopped breeding very recently.
