This is a silly question but I was listening to my four month-old chicks peep their hearts out and I was wondering when I would start hearing some bocking!

So when do chicks start talking like chickens? Is it sudden, or is it gradual, like their voice is changing?

I just love the sound of chickens muttering!

I'm new at this, but our chickens kind of came into it gradually. They still don't have their "bock bock" stereotypical chicken noises, but they're certainly headed that direction.

If I recall correctly I started noticing the change about 8-10 weeks. By 10-12 weeks I stopped hearing the "peep peep".

Our rooster doesn't peep anymore, but he's not crowing yet either. I hear the occasionaly "cluck" noise from him, but mostly it's a quite whine while he's getting treats.

I LOVE this question because I was wondering too! My buff orpingtons have gotten so big, so FAST, and it's strange to hear little "peep peeps" coming out of those big bodies!

I KNOW! My Rhode Island Reds are about the size of fat pigeons and they still peep-peep. It's kind of weird to see something so big make baby noises.

(Also, I realized I wrote my initial post a little strangely. I have four chickens that are a month old)
