Which hay for my rabbits?

Boo-Boo's Mama :

I should have said carrot 'greens'...my husband gets the carrot for snacks to take to work and the rabbits get the greens...now they will have competition with the chickens for those.

When I asked the vet about feeding Swiss Chard (not lettuce) she had no idea what it was and said all they needed was the rabbit pellets.

I think I would be looking around for another vet, for a second (and most likely, BETTER) opinion.

I think the vet thinks of them just as pet or to show for 4-H. They were surprised when we paid $150 to have them take off a toe. Snowflake was a FreeCycle rabbit, next morning after my husband brought her home I found she had a problem with a toe and it was bleeding...turns out it was dead and they said it needed to be removed or infection might kill her...think they thought we would just have her put down. She is the most expensive rabbit we've ever had.

No can do...she has been our dog's vet since we got her at 6 weeks old in 1997. The female vet (and male vets) are so very kind to all our girls. I suppose they just don't see many rabbits; for the most part their business sees horses/cattle and pets (dogs/cats). The vet in our county is worse...will not take any of my animals to him!

There are not many vets that are very familiar with rabbits. You would likely do better finding a good forum or list-serv with many active rabbit enthusiasts for future medical questions. For example, anesthesia can often be more dangerous for rabbits than a mangled toe, which is a very common injury. Unless the toe had already been allowed to become badly infected to the point that it could poison the rabbit's bloodstream, she likely would have been fine with a little TLC, antibiotic ointment, and a clean wire floor.

You live, you learn, right?

Anyway, doesn't mean it's a bad vet, just maybe not the top choice for minor medical for a rabbit.

Wow! Wish I could get something that size. My DH had to get our neighbor to take him to the feed store in his pickup...we have a small car so a bale of hay will not fit in it. That changed as of yesterday...he bought a used pickup with a camper shell...Lordy, I can go crazy on CL.

ETA: DH just said our TSC had a very small bale of hay for $7.95.

I agree. Much like finding a good people doctor.

We moved away from our area for a few years and had a hard time finding a good vet for our dog and cats. One vet said our Toy Fox Terrier was too hyper and advised my DH she needed tranquilizers. Geez, she is a terrier!

Boo-Boo's Mama :

Is there a problem feeding BOSS as a treat or other grains...what grains?

I feed my rabbits BOSS a few times a week. It helps with shiny pretty coats
