Ok so…I have a silver laced polish hen that I know for a fact is a hen but still not sure what my little one year old “Cotton” is. I’ll post photos so you can see why I’m at a loss. Large wattle smooth crest no spikey tail feathers sweet and aggressive at times but mostly sweet and wants to be picked up every morning. I trimmed their crests last winter bc I was concerned about freezing temps and wanting to give them better sight bc their feathers were impeding their vision and making them skittish but now …my polish hen has spikey feathers and my Cotton …well you’ll see why I’m confused. I’ll put before and after trim photos.
So I made a post on a persons thread and I’ll re-post what I asked in that thread…
“Still baffled with my new to this breed - white crested black polish who's a year old - bc I have 2 giant beautiful Jersey hens (that act like roosters) and are the sweetest bc I have 1 (for sure)silver laced polish hen and 2
Wyandotte hens but this one polish has me baffled. I trimmed his/her head feathers last winter bc of the cold wetness in pacNW and was worried about it and now I'm just hearing a little whisper of a "cock-a-doodle-do" at times and it goes down when I approach to pick up just like a hen would do but my hen Jersey giants did this too so I'm at a loss with my white crested black polish sexing. It's super sweet but sometimes a jerk to the other hens and my dog sometimes ruffles its neck feathers when my dog has to pee but so did my Jersey giant hens until this one came along. Please help bc if he's a HE I want to leave the eggs alone and let them hatch and if not ...I don't want to have rotten eggs to deal with. Thank you and I pray I finally know what Cotton is. I’ve never been this unsure with chickens in my entire time raising them over 15years. The photos of before and after with both my white crested black and my silver laced hen with her rock star spikey feathers which …aren’t ROOS the only ones to have “spikey” feathers in this breed??? Well that theory needs to be trashed bc my hen has spiked rock star feathers 100%. Anywho…please let me know your opinions on my white crested black polish aka Cotton bc for once i want to lay this topic to rest. Thank you.

Yep, still hens. When they have that rockstar look, the feathers are far more slim and long generally speaking. But their throat and saddle feathers are also rounded.
