Hi all! We found two baby chicks almost 4 weeks ago abandoned in a field and I am caring for them until I find them a forever home (as pets). It's proving to be a very difficult task. The other day they escaped their enclosure and were roaming the yard when I noticed one pooped "diarrhea" it was very watery...so I kept an eye on them and about 40 seconds later they pecked their butt and pulled out a white worm that they ate right after! I was horrified, disgusted and now very concerned. I'm not sure how old they are, but from what I've gathered online, they're about 4-5 weeks? (Please see photos attached).

My question is, should I deworm them now or wait another week? I've been reading that Safeguard paste for horses is a good one to use. I want to help them without potentially hurting them. I've been reading that deworming them too early could hurt the babies.

Please help.

Thank you in advance!

Valbazen is a good wormer to use 1/4 ml orally per chick once, and again in 10 days to get the worm eggs that hatch. If using SafeGuard horse paste or liquid goat wormer, give 1/4 ml orally per pound of weight for 5 consecutive days.

Thank you very much! With safeguard, they’ll be done after those 5 days?

Yes, they'll be done after the 5th day.
I'm curious. How long was the white worm that was pulled from the chicks butt?
It happened on Sunday, so 3 days

I would say about 4-5 inches

I believe dawg53 meant how long was the worm. I’m curious to know too
Oops! 😬 I would say about 4-5 inches

He pooped and it was very watery so I kept an eye on him, he pecked his butt a few times and then pulled it out and immediately ate it.

Hi! This one correct? 0.23 ml for 5 days. Not sure how much they weigh and I can’t weigh them. I’m assuming they’re about a pound. I’m reading I can put it in bread so it’s easier for them to eat. Is this correct?
