Hi! Soooo….. I have a suspicion that my Whiting True Green is actually a rooster. Now I have no experience with this, other than what I have researched. Can you take a look at the pictures I have attached with my thoughts below, and see what you think? This bird would be coming up on 8 weeks now, and maybe she is a she but just going through an awkward stage??

What I am thinking:
The close-up is of my Whiting True Green (Red bird) with the True Blue, both 8 weeks. The Green’s comb is even larger than the other 3 birds who are two weeks older. Plus it is the pinkest compared to the others.
  • The feathers are not broad/round like the other girls, but much thinner, maybe like a pencil feather? But this is tough to tell because many of the feathers are still coming in, especially on the lower back near the tail.

  • The bird regularly stands very tall with the tail stuck up in the air, and darts around whereas the other girls kind of meander at their leisure.

  • Every once in a while, I hear a “CRAWWW” but I am not sure who is doing this over all the little peeps of everyone else.
    Thanks for checking this!

I have never really raised whiting true greens, but this looks like a hen to me. The comb would be a bigger and more red at 8 weeks. Also, from the pictures, the tail feathers seem round like a females would be. I do know that whitings can be flighty so I would say that she acts that way for that reason. Let's see what everyone else has to say, but i'm on team pullet.

I’ll bite. I’d say boy but that’s just comparing him to my birds that are a little older (couple weeks). His comb is bigger than my leghorns and they generally start developing around the age mine are. He also doesn’t have a solid feather pattern so I think he’ll be a bit flashy, girls tend to be dull so they don’t attract too much attention on a nest.

Yes, definitely flightly. Both the whitings were when they first arrived, so I put those two with the 2 week older Buff Orpington, and she tucked them in like they were her babies. Any time they got spooked they would run and hide under her. At the moment, my BO is my lead hen, go figure :) That arrangement helped settle them, but Red here still will run around and stretch up really tall than my other 4 girls when some is going on near them. The other girls all have nice organized feather patterns already, but this one is just rough looking and patchy. Which then again, WTG bred for egg color and not appearance! Might have to wait this one out a bit longer.

Hi! So its been 2 more weeks, the Whitings' are now 10 weeks old. I'm still not convinced either way as to gender, but definitely going to be a pretty chicken. I love the tricolor of the reds and copper. Here are some more pics to consider if pullet or cockerel.
