Hello. I have 2 drakes and 6 ducks all born April 6/7. SOMEONE laid an egg last night!! I have asked a few of the ladies to fess up and nobody will. The egg was found in the middle of the hut on turf all alone this morning when I let everyone out. Not ONE gal took a second look and left for the yard to forage. I took a few minutes to watch their actions to see if anyone looked different, walked different or if anyone was doing any extra gossiping about the egg ditching mom in their flock. NOTHING!

Can you ever tell who did it? Will the ladies ever show signs of getting ready to lay an egg? Will they ever snitch on each other? :duc

Sure was tempting to try and hatch it out. I have no idea if the drakes are mature enough to fertilize anything but they sure try.

Seems awfully young to belaying already.
I thought the same thing. I hatched them out April 6/7 myself so the age is accurate. They have been doing the mating dances for over a month already. Their hut is secure at night and we do not have any other animals in the area that can lay eggs so to speak. The geese are held in a different area at night and it is def not a goose egg. :idunno

Sorry I over looks the April and for some reason was thinking 6 like June. They are old enough to start laying my Runners were mating at 4 months laying at 41/2 months better give them a few weeks or more before hatching then check for fertile eggs.

I am not sure I will do anything with the eggs at this point. Maybe crack over the dog's food.

Is there any way to tell who laid it?

I know Pekin lay white Cayuga can lay black to light gray Some Runners lay Blue to blue green or creamy white not sure about other breeds but we can probably find out on line
