Hi! We got our very first egg today! Based on how the girls have been acting my guess would be Cha Cha our Cinnamin Queen (doing the squat when you go to pet her) or Marshmallow our Wheaten Maran (she was in & out of roost all day). They are all 5.5 mos old.

  • Silver laced wyandotte (Squirrel)
  • Cinnamin Queen (Cha Cha)
  • French cuckoo maran (Raccoon)
  • Wheaten Maran (Marchmallow)
Thank you!!!

My guess would be your Silver Laced Wyandotte. That's my first guess and second would be the Cinnamon queen. The Marans should lay darker eggs.

Which one has the biggest, reddest comb and wattles? That might be telling as well.

Congratulations! The first egg is exciting. Have you heard the expression - "the first egg costs thousands of dollars, after that they're free.
It could be any of them but more likely the Wyandotte or Cinnamon Queen. If they are all the same age, likely the Cinnamon queen as a hybrid it could be laying first.
There is a way to be 99% sure. That is to check the space between the pointy pelvic bones. The one with over 2 finger width (or the one with the widest space) is likely your early bloomer.

Awesome! Have you checked the pelvic bones? It often won't continue without pause. When pullets first start laying, their reproductive system doesn't have all the kinks worked out completely yet. Especially at the point when days are the shortest. Daylength only changes by mere seconds each day this time of year. The pace picks up in the second half of January which is when the rest of your birds will start to kick in.

update: it’s Cha Cha our cinnamin queen! I found her laying her third egg of the week today!

Not knowing your birds, seeing them or anything else, that was my guess based on egg color and breeds, but any were possible. I've had Marans whose egg color was disappointing, so you just never know about first and onset of lay.
