Why are my chicks so skittish?

The best thing we did was use a pen with a front "door". We have it on our desk in the guest room, and we're never really above them. They still get frightened by the claaaaaw when we pick them up, and I'm glad for it! That means their instincts are kicking in, and they'll run if a hawk or owl ever visits them outside.

I have a few that are stand-offish, but one (my wheaten maran) is such a sweet, cuddly girl. She'll roost on your shoulder and even try to dust bathe on your clothes! It's the cutest thing ever. I hope that continues when she gets older. I've heard that puberty can change some of their temperaments.

I'm dreading the day that we'll put them outside. I've wanted to do some field trips to acclimate them, but this rain is ridiculous.

Heres a photo of the only chick that likes me! Her names Bippy and she's a barred rock.
She honestly looks like a roo a little bit ( the photo makes her look whiter than she is but the comb and wattles are pretty big and red) , but it's fine if she is because I can keep her in this area. Thoughts?

I think hen, there’s not much redness or growth on the comb for a chicken that old
