I have four Heritage RIR hens. I bought them last summer when they were about 5 months old, so they are now about 18 months old. I’m still getting what I consider to be medium size eggs (middle egg) at best. Another thing about them is that every two or three weeks or so I get one small egg that appears to have come from a hen that’s only been laying a few weeks. Yesterday I got one out of a nest that was small as well as a much lighter color than usual. (Egg on the left.) Instead of brown it was light cream color. Odd, very odd. Their living situation is this... I have the four of them plus a two & half yr old Buff Orpington; a two & a half yr old Golden Laced Wyandotte; a one & a half yr old Black Sex Link; and last and certainly not least is my two yr old Rhodebar/Americana cross rooster. They have a nice hen house with plenty of room. They free range from a little after sunrise till just before dark. We live on acreage that’s mostly hayfield. I feed them Purina laying pellets along with sometime snacks/treats. Such as grapes, apple (no core), corn cobs, sunflower seeds, etc. Just typical things. They always have access to plenty of fresh water.

Anybody with any thoughts please speak up.

Hi , I had a few heritage rir and the egg production was less then impressive. I now have rir from a farmer and they are laying bigger and more often . I’m not a fan of the heritage breeds , I get the concept but I just want more eggs
