Why does every single retail coop seller lie about how many chickens their coops can hold?

No way anybody with brains would do that

you would think that, except this is the requirement for industrial *Organic* poultry keeping practices.


My point stands that backyard keepers aren't trying to be industrial; so changing the recommended space on the packaging and websites for manufactured coops would go a long way in helping alleviate all the issues that people have and come here every day to solve.

Not chickens, but I still remember pleading with someone NOT to listen to the, “this coop can hold 10-15 ducks!” when I think it could hold at most maybe 2 or 3. The coop was also very flimsy and extremely overpriced.

This person proceeded to tell me they’d, “try it out anyway” and “IF” it didn’t work out, they’d get something larger..

Truly, I’m upset with these companies for tricking people into thinking their coops are any good.

It's even worse than we thought; so. 1.5 square feet per bird, 6 inches of roost space.

*KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF PEOPLE* go to town, crowd those birds. Then come here and ask all your questions why everything is going poorly. But hey, you're doing what federal government requires so you're doing the right thing, right?

The standards are real low. I suppose this little space is only for the night for organic chickens. I sure hope they can go outside during the day.

Truly, I’m more upset with all the people who eat chickens and eggs from factory farming without questioning how their lives look like.
Imho this is even worse than misleading people to buy flimsy products.

Chickens and other live stock in general need more protection with rules and regulations. And since factory supplies most meat and eggs, (and not the BYChickens/BYDucks) the life of billions extreme poorly kept animals needs more focus and exposure than the sellers of flimsy coops.

What people who are against abuse of animal life can do: Expose KFC and all the supermarkets who sell factory farm products on social media, write to journalists, publish articles organise demonstrations in front of a target. Manufacture child books, puzzles and games with true pictures of farm animals. And demonstrate against the misleading happy farms images. It all starts with misleading 1 yo children.

What people who are against untrue sale recommendations can do: If you ever buy or see something that is not okay, leave a review on trust pilot and other platforms. Explain why its not good enough. Include misleading with food that is sold.

Ask the BYC managers to give the reviews on sold chicken prefab coops a more prominent place. Equal to the coops you can build yourself. Very visible in the learning centre/articles. I did that once, with no effect. If more people do this, they might change the visibility of the reviews on prefab coops.
Write an article dedicated to prefabs.

The USDA only has federal regulation for Organic poultry keeping; there is no federal requirements; it is all State and Local (County) requirements, so that would be 50 to literal thousands of different requirements across our country.

(The United States is larger than all of Europe, and despite what it may look like to anyone outside the US, we really don't try and legislate a lot federally outside of military spending -- which most citizens are okay with

So if we want to look at poultry space recommendations we are going to have to dig around specifically for each state -- almost all of our states are about as large (or larger) than European countries. It is really better to think about the US in this way overall. There are a lot of misconceptions about this country because of this.)

So they made a documentary many years ago exposing factory farming globally called "Earthlings"

I will put a big fat warning here that it is GRAPHIC and not easy to watch. I saw it well over a decade ago, and I've never forgotten. I don't even want to type what I saw in that documentary; the cruelty is unimaginable how we keep animals in factory farms

so people know how bad it is, they just want to get cheap chicken and turn a blind eye

I actually emailed several manufacturers - asking why they believed this space requirement was okay, gave the reasons why it was not okay, and asked them to make changes. I received zero replies. This was all before I made this post haha

THIS is a great idea.. this is the actual solution, I think -- why didn't I even consider this?! My passion blinds me so much to solutions, I'm too old and set in my ways lol thank you for this so much

The US is larger in sq miles /km2 than the EU (European countries within the EU union/legislation). Countries like England, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Albania, Moldavia and Ukraine are not EU member. Their km2 are not counted.

On the other hand, the number of people in the EU are many more than in the US. .
