Wild Emus at The Lilly Pilly Tree

It’s enjoyable to me that these emus have no idea that they are ‘in my backyard.’ Imagine, if Offsider is a National Park bird, it’s possible that she had never seen a human until she crossed to my block with Limpy Chick – maybe she’d seen a car on a track.

The 'spear' sticking up is actually the bit that flowers. If you are lucky, you find one completely covered in lovely little white flowers.

So, this is Offsider Emu -- the female of the 'home team' breeding-pair -- attacking the intruders (including Undersized Emu).

Now, watch carefully, Antique. Dad and The Chicks high-tail it early -- you can see Dad's ruff.

Then as Offsider arrives on screen, she swings to the left. Now, that's Undersized Emu in front of Offsider. UE thinks for a milli-second about fronting up against Offsider, but gets smart and bolts.

A female vocalized in the early hours. ‘Jumbled’ and quiet. It is surely Offsider -- ??

One of the chicks is still cheeping! So, at this point, we must re-jigger all we know about how emu chicks behave as they come into adulthood. Until now, our main datum has been the (excellent) observations we made of Toosh Toosh’s first clutch, which were a little sooky (do ask), and stayed later than they might have.

But a chick cheeping at age spring/summer/autumn/winter/spring/summer – and three weeks into autumn? Ok!

This chick/young adult emu is one of Dad's chicks, and was cheeping as I took the photo. It seems to be just one of the four still cheeping.
