Will chickens sleep at night with a light on?

I don't either. But my roos start waking up to 2hours before daylight. I guess mine are just early birds.

Mine don't like it when I get home late. Most will roost with a squawk or two when I turn things off... but I always have at least 2 that stay up to scold me

I just laugh, put my head light on the ramp and shut thing down. I sure love these chickens. I never thought I would get such a kick out of this.

That made me laugh. DH and I went out to dinner and got back late, of course DD forgot to lock the chickens up so I just go back from doing that. They were all fussing about the headlamp and the neighbors shepherd was barking her fool head off with the activity out there so late at night---All of which got the chickens going more, made the steers wake up and come see if I'd brought them any treats and set my dogs off. Sure can get noisy out in the country--never boring though.

We have had a cold spell here the last few days, and my White Leghorn got a touch of (I think) frostbite on her comb, so I put a light into their coop overnight for the heat gain. They don't seem to mind it. They just tuck their heads under their wings and sleep.

At Christmas Lowes had 85 watt red flood lights. I use one in the upper section of my coop to keep the water from freezing. Also it adds some warmth to the coop. My hens sleep two sections down from there. The light is dim where they are but I feel better about the water not freezing. It does not seem to bother my hens or roo. While I was gone my hen keeper had two ,yes two 110 watt brooder bulbs going in there. The Roo was waking up at all hours and crowing. She did not know why.....Sigh... I sure am glad to be home to my hens and roo. I love his deep crow. He is a splash orp. Gloria Jean

I have a similar situation (which I posted the other day).

I'd like to get my girls in tune with the natural daylight. They've had a 250 heat lamp, then when they got there feathers in, I lowered it to a 100w red light. I set up a timer and didn't set the on time correctly so when the sun went down they went nuts in the dark.

So, I don't know how to gradually get them used to being dark at night.
