I am hoping to get some ducklings soon. I want to know if ducks have enough sense to not try and get over the fence as I have four dogs or will they still try and get over even though they will be able to see the dogs.

How tall a fence? at a young age they will likely be fearful... i know my week old was less than impressed with the yappy mutt barking at the run other day

but mama wasn't to worried so it settled down..

My adults don't like being touched by the dogs(ok licked lol) but i have had hens fly into the fenced off area for the dogs... they aren't fearful but cautious ..

In the end though you can never 100% trust any dog with a duck, so i always shoo the hens away and ensure the dogs don't go to close when they are loose... it's a balancing act but certainly doable to own both cats & dogs & poultry.

If the duck can fly it will fly over the fence, dog or no dog. None of my ducks are fearful of the dog. My 2 week old duckling torments our dog and chases him to get to his spots on his feet lol.

At a young age flying isn't going to happen but jumping can that is why i asked the height of the fence.. Personality of the duck probably plays a role.. as i said my birds are all cautious of the dogs and have been raised with them...

They probably won't go over the fence if the dogs are right there staring them in the face, but they will go over the fence if the dogs are out of sight.

If ducklings can go over the fence, then what stops your dogs from going over the fence?

HAHA,

That's funny!!! I wish my ducks were sometimes afraid of my dogs. My ducks free range in my backyard, and my dogs also utilize the same yard when I let them out. My baby duck ignores the dogs as she is only 3 months old now and pretty untrusting. She doesnt care one way or the other. My 2 older ducks on the other hand... think they ARE DOGS!!!! They wrestle with my dogs, they play chase, they try to eat my dogs food and treats (I now have to give my dogs frozen peas... to keep the ducks from getting the dogs real treats ie frozen peas are cheaper then baked liver lol)

My male pekin has been know to take my dalmatians bone a time or two and hide it in his females nest or in the kiddie pool. It took me a while to trust them all out together since I have 2 bigs dogs and one being a bird dog. But after a while, I realized the dogs play with the ducks very easy and saw them as a member of the pack.

Moral to the story... My ducks are just feathery dogs... not afraid of them.
