Good morning all. I was the one that two of my chickens were killed by a raccoon one was hurt badly it was last Friday morning. She seems to be eating much better. Her back seems to be getting better but it’s turning a little bit yellow below her wound. I was told by one vet that it’s kinder to put her to sleep because the chest wound would not heal. But another vet and many people here say that chickens can heal a lot better than we think they can. The chest one it just seems like you can put your finger underneath where she got hurt it’s wide-open I’ll show a picture of it. I just do not want her to suffer if she could get better. I’m willing to help her every day twice a day I go out there and clean her wounds and put antibiotic ointment on it. Give her medicine her antibiotics maybe I’m wrong I’ve never taken care of a chicken that was hurt this badly. She is eating a lot better and she’s vocalizing a lot better this morning she made a bunch of noise and she was hungry. I cleaned her area with a hose when she’s out out of it. Of course I am and put a blanket in there. She lays on it and of course I have to wash it every day. I will attach the pictures of day one and today. Thank you for taking the time to help and read this. How much aspirin should I give her? She’s a bard rock may be about 3 to 4 pounds. The vet told me to give her the ibuprofen, but it’s been very hard to give her that

She will heal. How are you cleaning the wound? Hibiclens or sterile saline in a spray bottle both work well to flush the wound, twice daily, then smear with the triple antibiotic ointment. Do not cover the wound. She does not need aspirin. You can trim feathers away from the edges of the wound if you wish. The wounds will gradually heal from the edges toward the center. This may take a couple of weeks.

I am not sure about the black scabbing. @Eggcessive, will you address this please?

You are washing the wounds every day, but are you putting Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment on them to prevent them from drying out?

Is she active and eating well?

You can give her one chewable aspirin two times a day. Pop it into her beak. Chickens take pills well as long as you pry open the beak and slip it in.
