Winter Duck Shelter (Help identifying issues with design/plan?)

I am working on a plan to repurpose my ducks' stock tank pond to transform it into a winter den and could use some insight from others who may have more experience than me or can think of any foreseeable issues this design may have.

To sum up, I was going to line the inside of the stock tank with bales of straw (16 bales), stick my ducks' doghouse inside the stock tank, and fill up the floor with more straw, and pile a couple more bales on the roof for good measure to provide a place my ducks can shelter when winter hits. The duck den is NOT their living space, but it will be contained within a 12' x 14' hard-top gazebo that I converted into a coop by wrapping it in hardware cloth. So they would have room to come out of the den if they want to.

I am also trying to decide if I ought to have their food and water (which would be prevented from spilling by having it on a plastic tray) inside the den, or keep that out in the coop area.

I figured it was best to keep the stock tank in the back corner of the coop as I have it now, and construct my duck den facing at a ~100-ish degree angle away from the prevailing winds. The opening would then be facing the sun during winter, but unfortunately, the coop is surrounded by heavy tree cover, so it probably won't get much sunlight anyway.

Anyways, I hope this idea would be viable, because my next scheme would be to line the entire coop with straw bales and that could get real pricey, real fast.

Thoughts?

How will they get into the stock tank to get into the dog house? Sorry I am not very good at figuring this out . But it sure sounds like a good plan.
Oh I must have forgot to turn on the layer that had the answer to that. My bad! Anyways, I have a ramp they can use for getting in and out, though they prefer to fly in and out of the tank even now (they are mallards, so fairly small and agile compared to other breeds).
