Hello
My 3 yr old chicken is moulting and has scaly mites and became run down. I have her and the others ivermectin, I have before and it was ok. I also treat scaly mites with vegetable oil and Vasaline. She’s gone way down hill since Monday. Wobbling yesterday and today, more today. Eating and drinking. Croop seems ok. She can get up and down from roost and sleeping in nest. I’m giving her eggs, garlic, small amounts of yogurt. Do I take her to the vet tomorrow? Her breath is ok. I can’t tell what is wrong and she falls to the side trying to eat even. Can walk, but not straight and is making normal sounds. Rests in huddled position during the day after eating.

Do you have any pictures of her and her legs? How does her crop feel early morning before she eats or drinks? Is it empty, full, firm, or puffy? Does she normally lay eggs? Have you gotten any thin shelled or shell-less eggs recently? Is her lower belly larger than usual? Poop pictures if any droppings look different are welcome.

Thank you. She doesn’t lay eggs really no. Poop was very runny, watery on Wed when I saw her on her own. Lower belly not sure. And can check crop tomorrow. I’m at vet now. I know they won’t know much tbh but I was just so sad if something could have been done and I didn’t do it.

I did get some shell less eggs recently 2 in last month but not sure from who as it was on the poop tray. Have 3 others.

Will take a photo of her legs soon. She’s sleeping all scrunched up.

It could be she that laid the soft eggs, and that could be a sign of a reproductive problem. Usually calcium citrate with vitamin d is something to give for up to a week to help. Let us know what the vet thinks, or if they try her on an antibiotic. I would try offering her some moistened chicken feed and cooked egg when she gets home.

Yes they usually offer antibiotics don’t they. She’s been in before. She does have reproductive issues as she’s only laid 2 eggs ever, we think. But she’s full of personality and she was healthy so it seemed ok! I have vit D, how much do I give her? I don’t have the calcium citrate but I can look that up. Thank you! Yes she does love eggs and happy to eat still.

isolate as a first step...just in case.

I'd suggest a possible cause.

Seen this wobbliness ( "Ataxia") before. Chicken recovered the first time ( aged 4) but not the second time a year later.

"Pressure on the sciatic nerve located under the pelvic bone. The nerve splits off down each leg ( like a Y shape) - if pressure from the pelvic bone acts on the nerve it causes numbness and she doesn't know where her feet are..."

Walks like she is drunk. Nerves get enlarged and press on the bone.

The vet might prescribe Meloxicam ( for cats) to try to calm nerve down. It's a non steroidal anti inflammatory.

Then it's 3 weeks of confinement and fingers crossed.

Things can go 'sideways' pretty quickly so get to the vet ASAP.

(The other possibility.? Mareks. Hope not. Was she vaccinated against M? )

Edited to say, if she is moulting, then it can be normal not to lay eggs. They also can be weak or have a poor appetite.

It seems that she does have reproductive disorder such as internal laying/salpingitis or infection, since she should have been laying eggs regularly. Tums works okay for calcium, and egg yolk can be given for D. Here is where to find calcium plus D:
