Hey everyone! We have some (standard sized) coturnix quail that are about 3 weeks old now. We've been giving them pine shavings as bedding. But recently they've been kicking their pine shavings everywhere and out of their cage. We have some wood pellets and were wondering if we could use it instead of the pine shavings?

Thanks,

I too am using pine shavings at 3 weeks. Please provide updates with your experience - I’ve been considering what else I can do. I sweep the floor every evening, and by lunch the next day, it’s for nothing.

I brood both chickens and quails on broken down (water added) pellet bedding, they do great.

But if it’s the dust you’re worried about... the pellets even when solid will break down to be even dustier 🤣

I will! Yes, pine shavings are a real pain to deal with. Hopefully the wood pellets work out better.

Yes, I've used wood pellets before with other animals and they certainly do! The biggest problem with the pine shavings is the quail just kick all of the litter right out of their cage, I'm hoping this will be harder for the quail to manage with wood pellets.

This is what I’m working with. Was going to move some to the bottom now that they are growing. The setup is inside my house - so it sort of smells like, well… yeah. But it’s hot outside during the day and the beginnings of summer heat is upon us.

We switched the quail's litter to pellets a couple of days ago and I can already see a huge difference!!

Our setup is very similar to yours! I would highly recommend switching to wood pellets, they don't make nearly as bad a mess compared to when they used pine shavings! They still manage to get their water bowls clogged up, but our quail aren't kicking nearly as much litter out of their cage now!

We have a 2 level cage right now as well, and our quail are currently on the top level.

We just put dry wood pellets in their cage and they don't seem bothered by it at all.
