Just a random post wondering if other people have done this before. I randomly discovered that my 3 lavender Orpington chicks love being wrapped in a towel. Specifically, being sandwiched by the two towel halves in total darkness.
I discovered this while holding them in my lap one evening. Decided to cozy them up and help them nap at night time. They were peeping so loudly. Then, as soon as the top half of the towel covered them, they went totally silent! I checked on them and they were asleep!
I’ve been doing this almost every night since they were around 4 weeks old. They’re now 7 weeks. They cry for me to pick them out of their pen at night time. They’ll cheep and squawk, then as soon as I get them sandwiched in their big bath towel, they go completely silent. They sleep like that until they’re not sleepy anymore, at which point they’ll find their way out of the towel and start grooming and stretching on top of it. Sometimes, they’ll finish grooming and sit back down again.
One night, I fell asleep next to them while they were toweled up on the couch. Every time I woke up in the night to glance at them, they were still there. At one point, they had all dug out from beneath the towel and just decided to sit on top of it. They slept there the rest of the night!
One time, one of the pullets accidentally made her way out from beneath the towel. She started peeping and crying. I wasn’t sure exactly what she wanted, but as soon as I put the towel back over her, she sat down and went to sleep again.
I suspect this mimics some kind of being under mama hen darkness dynamic.
TL;DR: Try wrapping your chicks in a towel at night! Mine love it!
Picture is when I lifted the top half off to check on them, and they just kept sleeping
