I'm sorry if this should go somewhere else, but I didn't see a better place to put it. My neighbor has a rooster that his hen hatched about 2 months ago. It looks like it is growing 2 extra feet on top of its regular feet. I don't even know how to explain it, unless you've seen the movie basket case. Dude has a twin that was growing on his side, I think, but it never fully formed and was just a deformed face on the guys side. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Any comments are greatly appreciated, I couldn't find anything about this online, but I am not sure how to word it either. I do, however, have pictures. The roosters left foot, is getting a sore place where the top toenail is rubbing or poking on the toe he walks on. Any suggestions to help this poor guy out? He used to perch on the roost at night, but his top toe is hurting him by poking in the already sore place. That's how the neighbor saw it. The rooster was sleeping on the floor of the coop. I thought about trimming the nail, but I swear anytime I try to trim any nail on any species, it bleeds ...even if I cut such a small amount, it just crumbles up and turns to dust. I use the little cat nail trimmers. 🤷🏻‍♀️The neighbor is a "let nature sort it out" type. Where I'm the " OMG can we help it" type....I dont know about bandaging it, I was afraid of hurting him more, and the fact that he lives next door and not where I can watch him all the time, made.me even morr weary of bandaging it. Please let me know what you think we can do, if anything.

Wow I've never seen anything like this in chickens! I would definitely consider trimming the nail so his foot won't get infected. Have a jar of quick stop to place the foot in incase the nail bleeds to quickly stop it. Maybe blu-kote on the sore spot? again I don't really know anythign about this happening before so :idunno

good luck!

It's interesting for sure.

Likely a mixed breed with some type of genetic defect. Any idea of what the parents might be? For some reason I want to say some Silkie is in the mix. Five toed chicken is probably involved somehow, but I'm certainly not in any way, shape or form a genetics person.

I agree, I'd trim the nails that are rubbing the top of the foot, you could slowly file them down or at least file and round/smooth the nail once it's trimmed.

The top of the foot has a sore, it would likely be technically called Bumblefoot since that is "infection of the foot". Since this is on the bony part of the foot. I'd just swab the sore/scab with Chlorhexidine, then apply triple antibiotic ointment on the wound. At this point, I don't think I'd remove the scab nor try to dig it out. See if it will heal up with daily care.

You can wrap the foot like you would for Bumblefoot once you've tended to the wound, making sure the wrap is under the nail after it's trimmed.

The wrapping could probably stay on for a couple of days before changing as long as it stays dry and is not heavily soiled. If you aren't able to tend to the wrappings frequently, then leave those off and drop by a couple of times a week to swab with Chlorhexidine so the sore will dry up.

What if I use veterycin spray? Or I have antibiotic ointment. With no pain relief. 😬. I'll see if he will let me trim the nail. (The owner, not the rooster. 😆) I have always used flour for the dogs, I'm guessing it would work for the chickens too? Thank you so much. I'll see if I can get a pic of the mom and the possible dad. I have no idea of the breed though. I'll see if the owner knows.

And when I started searching for this online, I kept seeing the silkies with their 5 toes, but his are not placed like theirs. His looks to me, like a foot grew from another foot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It my be a cause of inbreeding one of my chickens has a toe on there whing I would suggest that your neighbor should get some other chickens to prevent brother and sister chickens to breed because there little ones could also breed and so on which can cause this to happen. I would suggest that you keep trying to cut the toe nails to prevent infection in the foot of the chicken.

You can use flour or cornstarch to stop bleeding if necessary. I've found that toenails will bleed quite a bit, but they do eventually stop with a bit of pressure.

Vetericyn spray should be fine. I'd still just leave the scab for now and see how it goes. It's on a bony area which would be tricky if opened up, hopefully it will just start healing up and drying up on its own.

Yes, Silkies do have 5 toes, I think maybe a couple of other breeds do too. I've seen photos of split toes like that in Silkes several times here on BYC. Genetics or inbreeding (same thing I guess LOL).
