Ohh no. Hopefully you can get some non-leaky sons from him? I don't know how I missed that in the first photos, but it does look very light.
Hopefully his comb shape will stay good too. I have a cockerel with awful comb shape, and looking back it was pretty apparent from the moment he started growing. It started growing upright, and just never stopped.
Yeah I plan to try to use him and see how bad the leakage is when passed down. I know the purists only do bluexblue for their blues…but this blue boy is so lovely (and I was obsessed with him as a chick, he was sooo pretty) I’m gonna try using him with my black hens and maybe I’ll get lucky. I also put in a bid at the ABC silent auction in hopes I get some high quality stock non-leaky boys. I don’t have a ton of space to hatch lots of non-SOP birds that I can’t at least sell as decent quality Ams to others. I want to be able to sell them to 4-H kiddos too so they get used for a fun learning experience and to help get more bantam Ams around CA.

It seams that the gold base makes the green sheen better. I believe silver is better in blue because it eliminates the brassiness that can occur in the color. This is why I believe silver base would be better for lavender because leakage would be less noticeable and it would help eliminate the brassiness they tend to have now.
I think that’s very true! The green sheen is just so beautiful 😍 and these birds are all clearly gold based in my batch so even the blues have a lot of green sheen! Not ideal for SOP in the blues…so that’s something I have to deal with. I’m sure you are right that self blues with the yellow leakage are likely gold based. Silver base seems to make much better self blues!

I'm wondering if it's because they may be based on the Gold based blacks. Or they have the gene that causes silver to bleach out.

I had two silver Phoenix cockerels one bleached out and the other remained clear silver. I sold both of them. Wishing i would have kep the non bleaching one now. So the two I have now that I'm growing out I hope they don't bleach out. :fl
Yeah I think there’s definitely something to that gold vs silver base! I need to start learning what to look for in the chick down to tell the difference so I make better decisions in the future. There’s so much to learn!

Learning something new every day. Ha. I knew There was a reason breeders would separate blue and black stock based on the silver or gold gene, just never knew quite what it was. Yeah, in this case Lavender would definitely benefit from the silver gene.

Yeah that is pretty pricey freezer camp meat! 😫 Hopefully you get lucky and come across some pullets at some point! I got my first ones from a breeder who was willing to start them for me to guarantee pullets. Was the best!
Lucky you!

Look on FB. There are some times some give aways from breeders. Also if you become an ABC or AA member they have discounts for you.
Okay, I'll keep an eye out. Honestly, I just came THIS close to getting burned for $250 from someone supposedly selling cord wood on FB Marketplace so I'm a little gun-shy right now. I had to report them both to PayPal and my credit card company to not lose my money <shudders at the memory> But I will look into it, thanks. I'm not and never will be a breeder, just want a few of these magnificent birds.

I have 2 Americanas that I got from 4-H when I was 7 years old. I used to have 6 but one was a rooster (We lived in a small neighborhood at that time and the HOA would not allow us to have a rooster) and the rest passed away. They are very old now, they are about 7 years old. I have always loved Americanas, they are so sweet and super hardy too. One of my Americanas got attacked by a very large dog and had holes through her body, the vet was just going to put her down but we didn't give up on her. We bathed her and made a chicken hospital for her. We prayed and prayed for her to heal, and guess what, she is still alive. She is an old hen but she is still so beautiful and sweet. I love how Americanas look too, they are so beautiful. So, Americanas are one of my all time favorite chicken breeds, and I bet you will like them too. :jumpy:love:D

Ugh I understand that. I'm gun shy on buying from FB marketplace, but you wouldn't be buying from there. It would be a farm page. Ill get you some names to look at sometime today.
