Remember, hatcheries try to stay within the guidelines for the breed but rarely follow strict SOP.
You pay more for quality.
As an example, hatcheries produces reliable everyday egg layers. BCM's are not that.
Everyone wants the dark chocolate eggs and they want them everyday. BCM's should only lay roughly 3 days/week to build up that heavy dark spray that's so sought after. I have 1 dark layer out of my 3 hatchery hens and lays 3 to 4 days per week.
My thinking is hatcheries have found a happy medium producing a BCM that lays a 4/5 possibly 6 egg but lays 5+ days. This pleases most of the population but then some wonder why their not getting the 8/9's and then question why their bird doesn't meet SOP standard.
This is in no way a direct comment towards anyone, just my opinion. I've got hatchery Marans. 5 total. 2 (1 roo, 1 hen) of them I feel are pretty decent and I'm working with what I have. They have their faults, but I know I don't have breeder stock and didn't pay for breeder stock.
@BrahmasMama02 , enjoy your little man, don't sweat the small stuff. Let him grow out and see what he becomes. He might have a couple faults that show up but it's all fixable. You just gotta find the best hen to mate him with and hatch hatch hatch..
