    My loud chirping Amberlink.

If she is okay and not hurting then it may just be her personality. I have an EE that was fast from the day we brought her home. She was the runt and ran over and under all the chicks all the time in the brooder. We named her Speedy. She didn't slow down until she was over a year old but she is...

    Toys and enrichment?

Yes, I tried the xylophone and they would watch me play it but buried it after I left. Lol. They prefer alfalfa hay to rummage through and hanging fruit and snacks.

Pennsylvania- Legalities of selling produce/seedlings/honey questions

In Louisiana, they encourage you to register your beehive. It benefits you so the mosquito man does not spray within a certain range that would harm your hive. Also, it will protect you from anyone else keeping bees since they require that beekeepers be a minimum of five miles apart. They will...

Where is everyone getting their cartons?

We don't sell our eggs we only give eggs to family and friends. So in my case, they collect cartons for me. If you are selling your eggs, you can try Amazon, TSC, or maybe a local dealer. Once the cartons are no longer usable, I use them for planting seeds in my greenhouse.

Official BYC Poll: Do You Wear a Mask or Respirator When Cleaning Your Coop?

The way our coop is designed I am done in less than 10 minutes. I only step in once for a moment to sprinkle the deodorizer after I am done. So, I feel like I don't need to wear a mask and so far I have no ill effects from it.

How can I get more eggs

When my ladies are coming out of molting or a winter season I throw some black oil sunflower seeds in the run and it seems to give them a boost and they begin laying in a day or two. Worth a shot.

Vote - to cull or not to cull

When it comes to children I would not want to take the risk.

A visual - adult chickens in Producer’s Pride Sentinel Coop

That is a great post. When we started out we looked at those coops and thought no way for two reasons. 1. It looks too small and I wouldn't be able to add more. 2. In Louisiana with hurricane weather it just wouldn't last. So we built a large coop and run thinking it would last a while for...

Read before buying Comets/Red Sex links

These are very intelligent, curious, and adventurous chickens. My other chickens have no problem staying in the fenced areas. My Comets are impossible to keep within boundaries unless you keep them in a fully enclosed run. I find them on the roof and on the other side of the deer fence. I will...

    How young is too young?

Thank you everyone for the great advice. Since I started this post I have left my babies in the coop/run 24/7. I have decided to leave the pop door open so that in the morning they can get their food and water without me letting them out. They are in the coop/run 24/7 since they are so little...

    How young is too young?

I'll try to get a picture but our coop is off the ground and has large windows for ventilation. The run is fully covered. I have put the babies out and they are doing very well. I think we are good. Now I know next time they can go out in 3 weeks.

What breed/kind of chickens to get??

Oh, I should mention that I have a few sex links and they fly higher than other chickens. If that is an issue you may stay away from getting those. They are quite friendly as far as following me but not sitting on my lap.

What breed/kind of chickens to get??

We live in Destrehan, La, and have an assortment but the Barred Rocks are the most friendly. They enjoy sitting in my lap and like being petted. My others are friendly and will come to me but do not want to sit on my lap. I have EE, Leghorns, Black Australorps, RIR, and Blue Plymouths. We also...

Well, it's past a year since we started raising chickens and our chicken math is crazy. We are now into our third batch of chicks and have 27 chickens. We keep saying this is it but by now we realize our chicken math is neverending. I never thought raising chickens would be such an addiction.

    How young is too young?

Our coops are off the ground with lots of windows and shutters due to hurricane threats here. The runs are on the ground surrounded with poultry cloth all over and hard, solid roofing. I still worry about snakes getting in the run but not the coop. I constantly check on them during the day to...

    How young is too young?

I guess I can start leaving them in the coop all night and just leave water til morning. Thank you so much.

    How young is too young?

My coop has a door that I can close at night and off the ground. My run is covered on all sides but still nervous about leaving the door to coop open all night. So I will leave them tonight but close the coop door at night for added security since they are still little. We are 25 minutes from...
