Pullet.
Hatched mid-May, 2023.

I had only one baby hatch, will post pic today or sometime this weekend.
And something killed my F2 hen! When I went to feed the chickens yesterday her head was ripped off, she was in the run, my guess is probably was a coon. And something also got my sport OEGB hen. :barnie I’ve got live traps set so hopefully I can catch the murderer. If its a coon, he won’t be live for long.

Here are the girls from earlier, one of the hens got out and I think what ever got the 2 hens also got her. Hen in bottom is the hen I’m using for the project

I’m very disappointed in this years birds. Hopefully next year I can produce the birds I was hoping to get this year.

That’s a shame. Hopefully you can get whatever killed them before you loose more.

The two top pullets have lovely eye color though, it really stands out in vibrancy even from far away.

Hopefully next year brings improvement. Anything exactly you’re looking to improve in that generation? Mottling? Foot feathering? Sorry, I’m in need of re-reading the whole thread.

I caught a coon on my game game camera out in our field yesterday. I stuck the trap out there with the chicken it killed, peanut butter and some wet cat food so hopefully when I got out to check it around noon (deer season right now, most people don’t hunt at noon) he’ll be in there.

The blackest pullet is one with the beak deformity so I can’t use her. I also noticed the nice eye color!

Its ok, I was hoping for better muffs/beard, eye color, vulture hocks and feathered feet and possibly better hen color, but mostly the beards and feet. But a lot of this years chicks have hat bad feathered feet and no vulture hocks and the ones that are good have had the beak deformities. So as of right know there is only one hen that can move the generation to f4 next year. And a side note, a lot of the babies have been boys.

Next year I’m going to try to start the breeding season in February to get an early start. Will definitely have the same breeding groups as this year. I haven’t sold and of the hens I said I’d get rid of, so thats a plus. And I’ll use the F3 hen from this year to move the project a tiny bit ahead. Hopefully the newest baby is a hen. 🤞

If some of you remember that black f1 hen, well I still have her and I believe she’s BigFoots mom. Anyway I didn’t use her this year. Mottling is recessive so she may very well carry the mottled gene. Just for laughs and giggles I’m going to go ahead and through her into the f1 breeding group next year.
