So, my coop... It is always changing. I originally built an 4'x4' box that is 2' tall and put it on 18" legs for my brooder box. At around 4 weeks old i started to build onto this box. Adding the roof with a full vent on top, and making both roof pitches access doors. This allows me to get into the coop from just about any angle i need. My coop has a 10"x12" door and eight 12"x12"x12" nesting boxes. The back of the coop opens up to give access to the nesting boxes. Then i built a 4'x4' run that connected to the front of the coop and is covered with the same roof pitch as the coop. Even though my chickens free range i soon found that this was not big enough for them. So during this time i had 4 Production Red Pullets and 6 Guinea fowl. My thought was then to add a run to the back of the coop so that when my wife and i go away the chickens and guineas have somewhere they can go and are not cooped up the whole time. I built a 8'x12' covered run that is 8' tall with a single pitched roof. I also built a feeder box that will take three 40lb bags of feed, and 2 waterer units that will take 5 gallons of water. I had a friend that had hatched silkies and my wife loved them so we took 6. Unfortunately, my wife and i have an acre and let the birds free range. Most of our neighbors do not mind that the birds occasionally wonder onto their property but one neighbor began to complain about the Guinea Fowl so i had to get rid of them. I thought it was cruel to keep them cooped up all day when i let the chickens free range so i donated them to a wildlife sanctuary. So with the 4 hens not getting along with the silkies i had to then build the silkies their own home. I added a 2'x4'x4' single pitched coop onto the side of the run so the silkies had a place to go at night. No matter how done you think you are the coop is it is always changing! lol
