Howdy! 😀 We use pine shavings in the nest boxes too. The hens will fluff whatever material you put in their laying area. It's just their way, like people fluff their pillow to make it comfy 😄. If you're concerned about their behavior try straw, or hemp.

Well thankya! 🙂 Hardest part was pulling pallets apart. After that was done, it was design, measure, and nail it together. Super easy build.

I do wear a face covering, like a bandana or mask, because I use DE in the coop. It's irritating to respiratory system. I also wear eye covering because the DE makes for uncomfortable dry eye. Outside in the run I don't fuss with protective wear.

Is the last day in October and we've seen our first freeze here in the desert. Cleaning out the grow boxes and preparing a compost bin. Gleaning ideas from BYC on how to add the chicken coop/run 'material' to make a good composting pile.
