After reading post after post here on BYC regarding PVC feeders, my husband and I decided we could tackle this one on our own.
I went to the hardware store and bought a big section of 4" PVC, a "long sweep" 90 degree elbow, 2 caps, a 1.5" hole saw, silicone caulk, and a role of metal plumbing...
Our First Batch of Chicks
I had chickens as a kid, but I didn't really appreciate them then. They weren't pets, and we had a mean rooster a couple of times, and it was mostly just a project that my mom was interested in and we had chores because of. We have lived in our current house on 5.75...
Wow, thank you all for such thoughtful responses! My husband tried the stalking technique last night. Beatrix (our roo) doesn't really walk away when you walk up to him quickly. He stands his ground and jumps at us. But eventually he walked away as hubby was standing there, and hubby followed...
Thanks KlaHaYa, I think we'll try that! We really do like him except for this bit of aggression (and he's really not THAT aggressive). Though I think he'll jump at us if we try your technique. What do I do when he jumps on us?
We have 1 rooster and 5 hens. 2 of the hens are light brahmas and the other 3 are BOs. The rooster is supposed to be a BO too but I suspect he's not pure since his coloring is kind of off for a BO.
Well, I don't know where they all got the idea that we are all kinds of awesome, but they all...

Actually yes, we do have sand in the run area! It's never dry now because of the season so that hasn't worked very well for us. Hopefully it'll work better in the summer. Thanks for the tip about the rake. Previously when I've tried to rake it it seems like nothing actually gets raked...
Here's my coop.
Here's my (65 pound) dog to give you a scale perspective.
So, it's easy (enough) to clean inside the coop area. The run is IMPOSSIBLE. The only doors are the ones you can see, on the front and on the top of the left run. How am I supposed to clean it out? I am NOT crawling...

Oh yeah and the constant crowing is also a good sign
I was really just curious if he was even a BO since he's so dark. It seems that the BO roos we see at the fair and such are lighter. Thanks for the replies
We have 2 Light Brahmas and 3 BO hens, and 1 BO roo. They've all been together for almost a year now, no problems. Last week I noticed that both brahmas butts are completely bald around the vent. Looks plucked clean. The BOs are all fine. Any ideas what that's about?
I was told that I was getting 4 BOs and 2 Light Brahmas, all pullets. Well look how this one turned out:
He's huge, kind of aggressive, and WAY darker orange/reddish than the hens.
He was the same color as the hens when he was a chick but has really darkened a lot. He's beautiful but not...
We have one rooster and 5 hens. One of the hens is quite broody lately. I was sick as a dog the past couple of days so I didn't get eggs at all on Monday. So that means the broody sat on probably fertilized eggs from midday Sunday until midday Tuesday. Are the eggs still ok? How long before they...
Is it normal for them to not lay many at first? We seemed to be getting 2 every other day for a short time (maybe a week), and now we haven't gotten any since Saturday (or maybe Sunday). Is it normal for it to be sporadic when they first start laying? We have 5 hens and a rooster, and we're not...
