Male or female. Pls be female !

My chicks are only a week and a half and I'm trying to hard to watch their personalities and figure out who's male and who's female. I'll see a comb grow a little and be like GASP ITS A MALE. Then realize it's no bigger than any of the others :gig

    Rooster trouble

He is breeding the hens, it's normal behavior. His hormones make him a little bit aggressive about it. It would be fine to separate or get rid of the rooster. He will most likely calm down in a few weeks or so, he has to get through "puberty".

Chicken recovered after dog attack but not laying

She could still be internally healing, therefor stopping her abilities to make and lay eggs. That's just my opinion, I would think she should go back to laying eggs again real soon. Wouldn't be surprised if the first few she lays aren't very good quality, she might have to work out a few kinks...

    Poultry Lice?

I'm definitely going to do everything I can to give these birds a healthier life, I'm debating if I should send a text to the breeder to let her know how unhealthy they are or if that might come across rude... I'm not sure how she'd take it. She's nice but can most certainly have an attitude if...

    Poultry Lice?

I actually changed my mind (I am scatter brained, surprised my head is still on my shoulders) I'm going to do permethrin. Do I apply it straight onto my birds or just their enclosure? The directions on the bottle are grossly vague. Would do I do it all over the top of their feathers or lift...

    Poultry Lice?

I know, I feel terrible for not noticing it the first day. It's hard to see when you're just looking at them walking around, but as soon as I picked them up and started messing with them I can see these ugly eggs on just about every feather. That's actually good to know, I have 3 barn cats I...

    Poultry Lice?

I did some reading online and I think I'm going to get some Elector PSP. It's pricey, but I read that I only have to apply it once, where I've got to spray the birds again with permethrin from what I'm reading. Sounds good, I'll get some on Wednesday. Thank you both!!

    Poultry Lice?

This is why you should always quarantine new birds and avoid buying adults whenever possible. On one of my previous threads I was contacted by a breeder and bought her retired BLRW breeding stock. I was excited, these are my dream chickens! They are in quarantine pens so I can monitor their...

    Setting hen

I figured that way the chicks would go right to sleep under her and imprint on her better than just trying to toss them in there during the day when they want to run around and explore. Also I dont want the broody seeing me bring chicks, I want her to think she hatched them herself. Don't know...

    Setting hen

I set 10 different breeds of standard sized chicks underneath a bantam and she accepted them even though they were nothing like her. — just thought I'd add my two cents. I don't know if it's hot where you live, but during summer I prefer to put live chicks underneath a hen instead of...

It struck again. Any thoughts/ideas for predator proofing?

Unless you bury the hardware cloth, the same animal will be able to dig underneath the fence. Without a top anything could climb over it. Personally, I don't think it's very safe.

    Finally, My Dream Came True

Breeder told me they are 3, she is retiring them from her program. She wants to breed show quality Silkies next year and wants to only focus on that, so she wanted to sell off all her standard sized breeding stock. She had a bunch of Bielefelders(?) but they were spoken for already. I'm not...

    Finally, My Dream Came True

Thank you! I feel like the luckiest person ever. They're all calming down really well, the rooster is a bit timid but I'm okay with that.

    Finally, My Dream Came True

THANK YOU! I absolutely love them, they're warming up to me, the rooster is still timid but thats okay. I'd rather have a skittish boy than an aggressive one. They are trying to go broody on me already, it's too hot for that :th

    Finally, My Dream Came True

They are in their own pen right now for their quarantine period, then I plan on introducing them to my current flock. Im still in the "thinking" period because I did get a rooster and I wouldn't want to cause any fighting and stress. I've got an available coop, it just needs to be cleaned out...
