This article claims that light is beneficial, but I've also read that artificial light causes ovarian cancer; light that has a flicker to it (that may not even be noticeable to humans) will drive them crazy as their eyes are much more sensitive to light. It's the equivalent to a disco ball going...
They've probably molted but you've never noticed it. My Rooster only lost his tail feathers, one hen only lost a few neck feathers, one I couldn't see where she lost any, and one went almost completely bald like in the picture. Every hen is different and how many feathers they replace varies.
I read on a other thread to give her 1/3 of a Monistat suppository.https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/630307/sour-crop-cured-with-monistat (I know it's not the best idea but worth a try as this is 3 days of not eating). This morning her crop was extremely hard and definitely felt impacted. I...
I have a hen who was lethargic and puffed up like she was cold the other day on the roost, so I brought her in. After research, and checking her over I thought I had a diagnosis of Sour Crop. After 2 days inside with probiotic yogurt, and ACV water I woke up this morning to a small hard crop...
Glad I stumbled on this! My hen has a large water balloon crop and I can't get her to eat hardly anything (but luckily she will drink). After morning vomits and filling her with kefir and ACV water there has been no improvements. As a big man heading to the drugstore this morning to buy some...
She laid #2. It's the same color as my Redstar lays except it has a few small pen point darker freckles on it. And yes Chikita12 her green feathers have a great sheen in the sun!
I just googled a Black Langshan and she looks a lot like that, but also like a black Orphington...If I remember right the guy said he had Orphingtons for sale too, any chance she's one of those?
Thanks guys! Her legs do have some feathers on them (the same as the Roo), and their legs and feet are yellow. She laid another robin egg yesterday, and even in the nesting box! Smart girl!
I bought some "supposed" Black Copper Marans Chicks. Paid twice as much as more common breeds in the area, but I like the idea of the dark eggs. Well my 14 week old pullet laid her first egg and it's a normal brown. So I guess she's not a BCM, but that leaves me with, what is she (and her brother)?
Keeping both Roosters was out of the question. My hens would be mauled too much. I decided to keep the Black Marans. He's a very pretty bird with a green hue showing through his feathers. Maybe I'll hatch some eggs from the Blue Marans with him and see if they come out Blue or Black. Thanks.
I'm way late on this thread, but I started giving mine the ACV and it cleared up. I believe the heated waterer in the winter was allowing the bacteria to grow, and where it's winter time I wasn't changing the water as often as in the summer. I have continued the ACV regimen and they now get it...
I have 2 young cockerels. A Blue Copper Marans, and a Black Copper Marans. I was going to keep the BlueCM because the hens are sought after around here and it would be an opportunity for me to make some money with them, but I like to the looks of the BlackCM Rooster better and he will make for...
I have developed a bad girl who has a taste for eggs. I've tried the "easy fixes" such as filling an egg with mustard (which she ate every drop of mustard) and leaving an egg filled with pepper and hot sauce....but she still ate it all! So my two options were to cull the girl, or turn my nesting...
Do the seeds need to be dried? Can you use a fresh pumpkin? What about squash? They're in the same family and we eat quite a bit of squash and it would be easy to feed them those seeds, if they'd help with worms.
