  • I enjoyed reading your post "My girls are spoiled". You've been doing this for exactly one year longer than I have. I can imagine how much fun you are having with your girls. I have 10 RIRs, I am so happy we chose them, they are complex, engaging and funny (and sometimes a little grumpy).

    you are so right about how they can be. The girls are very vocal about not being out to free-range. They used to all of the time until this summer when 2 were killed by foxes. Now they are in the run and we made a larger pasture for them but they still are not happy. They want to be with me...

    We started ours flock with the 10 RIRs (straight run) and what was supposed to be Wyandotte (white). The hen and roo "Wyandotte" turned out to be Cornish Cross. I wanted to keep them long term, but they could not handle heat very well and their combs were turning purple, so we went ahead and butchered them at 16 weeks. They have their pecking order figured out now and are doing good.
