Black Sex Link chicken

Black sex-link (also called Black Stars) are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire...
Pros: Pretty, green eyes, very curious, playfull
Cons: I have none!
This is one of my faves, and I just love there green eyes!
Pros: Great layer, great forager, can be docile, very hardy against weather and disease, great personality
Cons: being mostly plain black, it's not the prettiest bird.
My BSL lays an egg pretty much every day. It get's on with all my other chickens relatively well and does not have a tendency to bully even at treat time. It is a very busy forager, a very active chicken, constantly here and there trying to dig up some grubs and get into new places giving it a great personality and enjoyable to watch it's antics. Once when I was bent over in the pen, it flew onto my back to try and then jump over the fence and out of the pen lol. It does not eat much for the amount of eggs it lays. Rain does not seem to bother it too much and is very hardy in cold weather. Best of all it is hardy against disease also. I'd read that they tend to be quite disease resistant, but now I've experienced it. When my flock got a cold, and all my other chickens showed some symptons of having caught the cold (some more than others), the BSL was the only one that did not show a single sign, absolutely nothing to think that it had been affected in any way. It kept on going, laying and acting as normal, making it an extremely low maintenance bird. It can by and large take care of itself. If it only had prettier feathering and went broody more often, it would be such a perfect chicken.
Pros: Good, reliable layers of large brown eggs; can be docile; don't really go broody, which can be a con;
Cons: Don't really go broody;
I got my Black Sex Link Chicken from Atwoods. She was such a pretty little baby, and I always enjoyed finding her lovely brown eggs. She was killed by a dog a few months ago, though. She will be missed. Read more here -----------------> https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/748155/the-life-of-pigeon

RIP Pigeon...
Pros: Extremely tame (even the roosters!), Lay large brown eggs, survived through many predator stages
Cons: NONE
Surprisingly, my lovely hens are still alive, even through all the predator stages that have taken over 35 of my other chickens :(. The hens lay very often, and lay large brown eggs. If you decide to tame them as chicks, it's totally worth it. My hens are sooo nice and are completely fine with being held.
Pros: Beautiful, friendly and hardy. Great egg layers.
Cons: Cant let ours free range because they eat the neighbors flowers. They wander pretty far and are fast so they are hard to catch.
These are beatiful animals. No health issues so far. They are friendly but cautious and got along with the ducks when they were in the yard. They wander pretty far away from the coop and like to hide. Egg supply is steady and they like their jungle gym and swing.

Pros: lays at least an egg a day, even in the winter
Cons: sassy, but no cons
We adopted our BSL hen three years ago when a friend couldn't keep her. She lived through an outbreak of respiratory disease that killed almost all of the other chickens and also survived a vicious husky attack. She is a small, grizzled thing, but I love her. She loves to eat insects that dare to venture near her and is fairly good with people. She lets me pet her sometimes, but mostly she just wants to be in the front of the line if there's any food to be had. She's the alpha hen in our thirteen member flock, but she's not mean like our Australorp. She's more like a grouchy, elderly neighbor lady. She minds her own business, but will peck anyone who comes to close to her. This is a great breed to have if you want a very consistent layer of light brown, medium sized eggs
Pros: Certainty of Sex, Pretty Feathers
Cons: Not for Breeding
The black sex link chicken is a great match for those desiring a flock without roosters. Mistakes in sexing are difficult to make with these chickens, so the occasional "oops!" rooster problem may be avoided. The coloring of black sex link hens is gorgeous! Sex linked chickens will not produce sex linked offspring, so keeping them for breeding isn't something most would be interested in.

Pros: Good layers, very friendly, docile
Cons: none so far
Got me a pullet BSL I named Ethel and she's been a dream. Curious gal, she always comes up to me as soon as I come in the run and tries to follow me out when I leave. Very tame, loves being petted and stroked. Haven't gotten eggs just yet but it may be because she's new. Overall a sweet breed, I think I'll be buying more Sex Link hens when I look to replace hens or expand.

Edit: Looking back now I think I actually have gotten eggs from this gal. I just recently integrated her and I have a couple smaller creamy-brownish eggs I've picked up. Dunno if it's hers or the red sex link I got!
Pros: Great Layers, Great Personalities, and Pretty!
Cons: Eats Lizards! :)
I have one blackberry which is what we call black sex links. She is very eager for treats and has funniest walk in the world!

I got a Jumbo egg the other day, she lays pretty big eggs every day.

She is a little sweetheart and is always happy and energetic! I reccomend these for people who want good layers, but if you have lizards outside they might just try and catch them!
Pros: Jumbo eggs, frequent layer, silky feathers
I love my BSL eggs! This is one amazing hybrid that produces extra-large to jumbo sized eggs. Here's a picture of my eggs and how they compare. The BSL is a hybrid of the Barred Rock and the Rhode Island Red, and as you can see, the BSL out-performs her parent breeds!

Pros: Lays an egg everyday, Calm, gentle
Cons: none
I love my Black Sex Link Hen! She is a very nice bird who lays an egg every day. I have heard people say that are dull birds and not much to look at but do not find this to be the case! I love her brown neck feathers and iridescent green black feathers that cover her body. I think they are wonderful birds for a first time chicken owner!
Pros: Simple yet elegant
Cons: Maybe a little too adventurous???
I had one pullet among other breeds of chicks i was raising with it but unfortunately it flew out of its fence and was killed by the rooster :( I would have really liked to have seen that one grow up into a hen :(
Pros: Very productive hybrid layers
Eat less feed than heirlooms
Beautiful feathers and easygoing temperament.
Cons: Haven’t found any.
I have had Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, and Red Sex Links and the only competition is Red Sex Link. Black Sex Links are better looking IMO. Raised 25 from chicks to pullets, and sold pullets to two other families. They are very happy with them and word spread around. Now people are asking me when I will have more BSL pullets. Maybe in another year or two! Get your coop ready because otherwise what are you gonna do?

This is my first experience with BSL. My babies are only a month old & already quite the characters. I have had RIR's for 5yrs now & wanted some new hen's. I got 6 BSL's & 2 BR's. So far ALL are wonderful & very sweet ;) I did also get 2 RIR's that I am raising for a friend until he gets their new home ready. I have 3 older RIR's that are almost 3yrs old. LUV my hens!!!!
Pros: Great layers, calm, beautiful
Cons: none
I bought these because they're good producers- imagine my surprise when they turned out to be some of the most beautiful hens in my flock! They black with gorgeous iridescent green feathers, and some red laced breast feathers. I'm loving them.
Pros: XXL eggs, great layer, very friendly
Cons: fat and slow... easy prey
One of my favorite hens is our black sex link. She consistently lays giant eggs and is very friendly. She is the largest hen in my flock and is mild tempered with all of the other hens.
Pros: Great layers of big brown eggs, good foragers, nice, beautiful plumage
Cons: None yet

Here's my black sexlink hen

My other black sexlink hen
I got 2 of these as chicks and now they are around 9 months old. They are very docile and amazing egg layers. Mine follow me around the backyard and they will come when I call them. They started laying at around 7 months and they have not missed a day since. Great pets and layers. Just a great backyard chicken.
Pros: Gentle, good layers, large brown eggs
Cons: None
I have 4 BSL hens and their 1st year laying we got over 1000 eggs! they went into 2nd fall molting and came out laying 1 egg a day per hen! so we expect to get over 1000 eggs again this year. I am very pleased with them. we replaced our buffs with BSL and it was worth it!

Pros: friendly, curious, very entertaining
Cons: so far, I can't find any cons
I purchased 4 peeps and they have turned out to be the best chicks ever! Granted I am fairly new at this and they are still not fully grown (about 9 weeks old), but they are so friendly. they perch on my finger. they are extremely curious and will come right up to you when you open the door to the coop. They are also very entertaining. I would definitely recommend these to anyone but especially to someone just starting out. Can't wait til they start laying.
