Black Sex Link chicken

Black sex-link (also called Black Stars) are a cross between a Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire...
Pros: Tons of big eggs and very fast to mature
Cons: not a pure breed, second generation is not as good
If you want eggs, get a few. If you are crreating a barnyard mix....you don't want these in the mix
Pros: Friendly, gentle and she constantly talks to me. Not broody at all.
I have a 3 year old BSL and she is a great hen. She it still laying about 4 eggs per week, but in the beginning it was 5-6 per week. She has never been broody and has good health. I will be getting more.

Pros: good setters, and reliable mothers. great layeers, of large brown eggs, zand no 2 hens look alike
Cons: some hens are unattractive
I actually raised 25 of these for 4-H one year. sadly, I had to take my favorite one to the show, and she was put in the auction. The other ones, were attractive, some had a little orange, and some had a whole orange head. some were a partridge color. all layed great, and a few set off a clutch, or 2 of eggs.great personallities. just butchered the last ones last year. they lived to be 8 years iold.

Pros: Amazing layers of XXXL eggs, ranging from light to dark brown. Hardy and great foragers.
Cons: EXTREMELY bird aggressive. Not friendly with people and generally skittish/aggressive. Loud.
Though my birds were great layers, I will NEVER have them in any flock ever again. These birds are highly aggressive and they'll be your #1 source of feather picking, bullying, and cannibalism problems in the flock - unless, that is, you've got Delawares, Orloffs, or especially RIR.

The birds might not be that bad with other aggressive breeds that can tumble with them - but I'll never take on the stress of owning them again.

DO NOT BUY THESE BIRDS FOR MIXED FLOCKS. You'll be walking into a world of hurt!
Pros: Jumbo eggs, frequent layer, silky feathers
I love my BSL eggs! This is one amazing hybrid that produces extra-large to jumbo sized eggs. Here's a picture of my eggs and how they compare. The BSL is a hybrid of the Barred Rock and the Rhode Island Red, and as you can see, the BSL out-performs her parent breeds!

Pros: Good layers of large brown eggs
Cons: Very slight temperament issue
I have two BSL's, and they're great birds! One of mine, Willa, is the largest hen in the flock. Ingrid, the other hen, is a bit smaller. She gets a bit jealous of the others when I hold them, which is quite funny. Both are very vocal when I'm around.

Their feathers grow back differently after each molt.

A friend of mine had 3 BSL's, two got hit by cars. This is Gertrude.

Ingrid

Willa
Pros: Large brown eggs, gotten lots of double yokes
Cons: Extremely noisy and pushy
I have 19 BSLs and they're the only breed we have. My family and all of the people that receive our eggs absolutely love them and we get lots of large and double yoke eggs, we even got a triple yoke! They can be rather noisy...or maybe that's just us because we have so many. Also they tend to be pushy and don't move and get out of your way like other chickens would, it can get rather stressful and annoying especially when you're carrying a water bucket! Overall they are great though.
Pros: Great layers of big brown eggs, good foragers, nice, beautiful plumage
Cons: None yet

Here's my black sexlink hen

My other black sexlink hen
Pros: Lay around 20 weeks old, lays everyother day and large eggs.
Cons: Mean, love to escape the coop, aggressive and noisy.
I purchased three black sex link hens from the local Blue Seal. Compared to my barred rock chickens, they were mean. We kept them in our guest room which is upstairs and every night they chirped extremely loud and woke up my little sister. They were every hardy outdoor in hot and cold. At twenty weeks old, we got our first egg from them, it was double yolk too. Then the next day we got another egg from her. It was an egg from her everyday which quickly added up. My black stars love to get out of the run and spend they day in the yard (and the neighbors

.) They are aggressive to my other hens and boy are they noisy.

Pros: Great layer, great forager, can be docile, very hardy against weather and disease, great personality
Cons: being mostly plain black, it's not the prettiest bird.
My BSL lays an egg pretty much every day. It get's on with all my other chickens relatively well and does not have a tendency to bully even at treat time. It is a very busy forager, a very active chicken, constantly here and there trying to dig up some grubs and get into new places giving it a great personality and enjoyable to watch it's antics. Once when I was bent over in the pen, it flew onto my back to try and then jump over the fence and out of the pen lol. It does not eat much for the amount of eggs it lays. Rain does not seem to bother it too much and is very hardy in cold weather. Best of all it is hardy against disease also. I'd read that they tend to be quite disease resistant, but now I've experienced it. When my flock got a cold, and all my other chickens showed some symptons of having caught the cold (some more than others), the BSL was the only one that did not show a single sign, absolutely nothing to think that it had been affected in any way. It kept on going, laying and acting as normal, making it an extremely low maintenance bird. It can by and large take care of itself. If it only had prettier feathering and went broody more often, it would be such a perfect chicken.
Pros: Attractive, friendly, intelligent and not afraid to strut her stuff and tell you what she thinks. Good egg layer.
Cons: None that I have found.
Our BSL, Pepper is cheeky and sweet. She lays medium brown eggs (she is only new to laying, so suspect they will get bigger). She is a steady layer 5-6 a week, even at this early stage of her laying life.
She does babble a bit. I call it her talk. She has a cute squeaky voice. She isn't just a chicken to us, she is part of the family. She lets us know what is going on and loves human attention.
Pros: Good egg-layers,sweet, tame
Cons: None
I have two nine-year old BSLs and they are still laying. They get along well with other chickens and are are tame, sweet, and lovely chickens.
Pros: Loud and Proud pretty hen
Cons: runs from me
Ruby Cluck-Cluck laid her first egg a couple days ago and it was tiny her next egg was bigger but not much bigger.
I found her in her box and I was able to pet her but if she is outside I might as well forget about petting her.
Pros: Great Layers, Great Personalities, and Pretty!
Cons: Eats Lizards! :)
I have one blackberry which is what we call black sex links. She is very eager for treats and has funniest walk in the world!

I got a Jumbo egg the other day, she lays pretty big eggs every day.

She is a little sweetheart and is always happy and energetic! I reccomend these for people who want good layers, but if you have lizards outside they might just try and catch them!
Pros: Great layers, Cold Hardy, Not Exteremely Wild, Good Foragers
Cons: Can Be Loud, One Likes Hidden Nests
I have two BSLs- supposed to be australorps. They lay good sized light brown, speckled gray eggs. My one BSL, Attila, LOVES hidden nests and has an obsession with black garbage bags. :) Polly, short for politian, is T-A-L-K-A-T-I-V-E, maybe not the best breed for a city chic. :) Mine are bigger, the right size for squeezing. They are very cold hardy, even though some vaseline on their combs/wattles would help. They don't take the heat the best - but I haven't lost any. Overall, great layers, friendly, and good foragers.

Pros: Good egg laying, friendly
Cons: feather picking
I got three Black Sex link from a family friend a year and a half ago. So far I have been pleased with them. My only beef with them is that during the winter my one hen would start pecking the others. I confined her for a couple months then reintroduced her and she was fine. I love how they lay, all through their second year I got three eggs a day and now that they are three years old I usually get three eggs a day. They are not super friendly but will come up to me and eat out of my hand and let me pet them. I like this breed but if I had choose one breed as my favorite this breed would be in about third place.
Pros: Friendly, Affectionate, Super Layer, Beautiful
Cons: Very Vocal
We've had amazing luck with the BSL. Super Layer but sometimes they get egg bound. Lost one last winter because we didn't recognize the signs quickly enough. BSL's are very curious, social chickens. Ours are the first to greet us and the most vocal. Sometimes annoyingly vocal. They can be demanding when they want attention (assuming they're hand raised) and love to be held. We have incredibly cold winters and some severe hot summers and the BSL's just take it in stride.

Here's a picture of our Layla (named her that because she's such a good layer)
Pros: Great layers, friendly
Cons: N/A

I have one BSL and she is wonderful!! She follows me everywhere I go. If you want a good layer this is what you are looking for

This is mine, her name is Bonnet.
Pros: Good, reliable layers of large brown eggs; can be docile; don't really go broody, which can be a con;
Cons: Don't really go broody;
I got my Black Sex Link Chicken from Atwoods. She was such a pretty little baby, and I always enjoyed finding her lovely brown eggs. She was killed by a dog a few months ago, though. She will be missed. Read more here -----------------> https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/748155/the-life-of-pigeon
