Sussex

The Sussex was developed in Sussex County, England over 100 years ago. It was famous...
Pros: Friendly, watchful, beautiful, good layers
Cons: can be fussy, bossy and/or demanding when it comes to wanting treats.
I have 3 SS pullets, and all are friendly but bossy at treat-feeding times. Aside from that, they are loving, don't mind being picked up much and lay well.
Pros: Beautiful, Sweet, Tough
Cons: Shy
I have one SS pullet, and she is very shy. She is always behind or beneath my other, larger pullet. But she allows me to hold her and has never pecked another chicken or myself. She is either a runt or a banty, however, so we'll see how that effects her egg production later on. Oh well. I mostly got her for looks! ;)
Pros: Friendly, spectacular plumage, not too loud
Cons: lower on the pecking order
i have 3 speckled Sussex chickens (2 pullets and 1 cockerel) in my mixed flock of 20 something birds. they are by FAR the friendliest of the bunch! they are not very high on the pecking order, and thus are subject to the flock bullies, but that's nothing a little TLC wont help! not very loud, and they are very good in a confined space! i will definitely add more

Pros: Beautiful, Friendly, KInd of Cold Hardy, Mellow
Cons: Large Combs, Big (could be good or bad...)
My rooster is so nice! When I'm weeding, he likes to sit on my shoulder ad watch his flock. He does love his treats. Cold hardy for the most part.

Pros: Very friendly, Lovely colors, regularly give me 4-5 eggs a week, easy to train
Cons: none
I have a couple of these birds and aside from their lovely coloring, they're a very sweet-natured bird. They're awesome foragers, yet come RUNNING when I go out and yell "girrrrlies...." They follow me all over the backyard (but then again, so do my cuckoo marans). They get along great with my 3 cuckoos. I have seen no aggressive behavior at all with them. One of them insists on laying in the rose bushes, but at least I know where to look. Very happy with these birds and would recommend them to anyone. How can you lose? Good looks, good personalities and respectable egg layer too. Yes, I do have to be careful or one of them will follow me into the house-she's a pest at times

Pros: Beautiful, friendly, talkative, smart

My chickens are currently all 4 months old, and of the 7 I have two Speckled Sussex, named Penny and Darla. They are such fun, quirky birds that are always the first to come running when I come out into the yard. They are smart, which I guess isn't always a good thing - they were the first to figure out that if you stand on the edge of the tall pot, you can reach the yummy tomatoes! And any time I come out with food, they are sure to talk to me about how much they want it. If I don't give it to them, they stand by me making all kinds of noise. Besides actually "talking" to me when I'm out there, they're quiet birds.
And they're beautiful, too! I absolutely love this breed.

Pros: Shes is a sweatheart
Teriyaki is a very smart girl. She figured out early on that she can get out of her brooder box. And now she knows that if I let her roam the back yard I leave the back door open she will come inside the house and walk around in my kitchen and drink water out the cats food dish. and she will follow my cats around the house I actually caught her in the living room laying in the cats bed. LOL shes a great girl and highly recommend this breed.

Pros: These birds are sweethearts and love to roam around
Cons: May attempt to escape
These are very smart birds great to sit in your yard and watch them.
Pros: Predator Wary, Great Forager, Fast Grower, Fast Layer
Cons: Tend to wander farther from home than Barred Rock
I had ordered a 10 pack of Barred Rock Pullets from a hatchery in OH. When I made my order there was a special going on "Free Rare Breed Chick with Order". The company sent me my mystery little brown chick, who kept me guessing. My special chick turned out to be a Speckled Sussex and a hen at that! I love her! She is easy to catch and layed my first egg out of the flock today! She seems to always have an eye in the sky for predators and when she takes off the others follow
Pros: Beautiful,intelligent,calm,friendly
Cons: Tend to be bullied by other breeds.
Can't complain much.
Pretty,friendly and descent layer.
Cold hardy and never get into trouble.
I love these chickens.
Pros: Pretty, friendly, fit right in with the older flock, lays large light brown eggs
Cons: My husband doesn't like her because she is aggressive to his little cockerel
Cinnamon is one of my favorite girls. She is the first to investigate anything new and is fearless. She is my biggest girl and I love her rich red feathers and white speckles. She is very friendly and behaves well with the flock with the exception of the new cockerel we are trying to introduce. She does not like him at all and chases him around. She started laying large double yolk eggs when she was five months old and now lays large single yolk eggs 5/6 times a week. I would definitely add more Speckled Sussex to my flock. She enjoys free ranging with the other girls every afternoon, but is one of the first to return to the coop at night or anytime I come out with treats.

Pros: Sweet, fast, pretty, friendly, outgoing
Cons: Can be a bit hard to catch
Well, I just got my 2 speckled sussex yesterday, so this review is subject to change! So far, I love my sweet little Basil and Dot! Basil is quite a lot smaller than Dot but has enough personality for a full grown hen! They like to tear around the brooder, peeping crazily. But once I catch them, they sit in my hand very calmly. I can't wait for them to grow in those beautiful speckled feathers!
Here is a picture of Basil:

Pros: friendly, beautiful, sweet
Cons: none
Of the seven breeds I currently have, the Speckled Sussex is my favorite (along with the OEG bantam). She is a really beautiful hen, lays almost every day, and is extremely friendly. She's a big girl, but she lets anyone hold and pet her. I would definitely get this breed again.
Pros: Friendly, curious, calm, non-aggressive
Cons: None
I bought two speckled Sussex two years ago. Out of my 16 chickens, they are definitely one of my favorite breeds. There are very friendly and the first to run up to greet me in the morning. They are not afraid or flighty and tolerate confinement very well (as I do not let my chickens free roam since I live in an area with hawks constantly flying overhead looking for a tasty meal. They are not aggressive to any of the other chickens I have. They lay well too. I just love them! In fact, I'm buying more today!
Pros: These chickens are ideal for little ones to raise as pets, and are super reliable layers as well.
I have 5 Speckled Sussex hens that are every one just as sweet and curious as the other. By far my favorite breed. If they hear my voice, they come running and have an uncanny way of making my day. I sit on the porch of my chicken house and they come eat out of my hand or crawl in my bucket. My little niece and grand baby just love to feed them and carry them around. Visitors are always wanting to buy them but I would never part with them. They make raising chickens an absolute pleasure.
Pros: Good layer, very healthy chicks with low mortality, very healthy as hens too, great in cold weather, not flighty, friendly
Cons: not snuggle friendly, SUPER curious. If it is at all possible for a chicken to get out of your coop/run, this breed will do it
I have now had a good variety of breeds in both bantam and standard size, and it is the Sussex that are always working so very hard to escape my run. Other than that, I think it is a very lovely breed. And they almost always look nice too.
Pros: Docile, great layer, beautiful, curious, hardy
I have a speckled sussex and she is my friendliest hen! She jumps on my lap and begs for cuddles. She lays a nice sized egg every day. She is very docile (and is a beautiful girl). I highly recommend this breed. I should be getting more soon.
Pros: friendly, curious, intelligent, great layer, beautiful, cold hardy
Cons: So curious they'll walk through the front door
Out of 15 breeds we've tried, this is my favorite chicken of all. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I love their personality and they are pretty. They are a pleasure. You can carry them around. They'll sit next to you on the porch. People love being able to pet a chicken and this one in particular runs up to people and says hello. They think everyone has corn. haha They held up great through our cold alaskan winter too,
Pros: Decent layers (if you have a heat lamp) good foregers friendly :)
Cons: Tooooo friendly they act like zombies! They come closer and closer than peck you! And are very noisy!
I like this breed friendly good layers there OKAY
Pros: Easy going, good layers.
Cons: Will peck at you, but not hard. Can be independent. We free ranger ours and they are always too far in the field for my liking.
They are so friendly and easy going. They are daily layers. They follow us around like our cats and always want to know what we are doing. They come to the truck when we get home, like a good farm dog.
