Pecking order or flat out bullying? Help?

Okay 2 different coops 2 different Chickens. One coop I have a hen that doesn't seem to want to mate, but the other hens are picking on her too, she stays in the nesting boxes hidden away. They won't let her eat or anything. Now in my other coop this just started, mostly the rooster picking on...

Looking for the best meat birds

Cornish Cross are cute and so sweet looking when they first hatch, they are eating and pooping machines in about 3 weeks! From the incubator to the freezer in 8 weeks! My experience with them is this, they don't do well in heat, they grow so fast that you would have to keep them cool in the...

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

I have an incubator that is getting me in trouble too! I use it mostly for hatching my meat birds. Keeps the cost of my meat down. But when you have a rooster, and you add other eggs to the incubator. You end up with more chicks than you need.

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

Just a better pic of mom teaching her babies to eat, one egg still has not hatched and she is no longer sitting on it but, it is hot enough out if it is going to hatch it doesn't even need to be incubated! Isn't Olivia a beautiful mom? She is and old one but being a good one!

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

There are 4 of the 6 that have hatched, one egg left doesn't look promising. Poor things are so hot, the heat indices is so bad here. I have a fan running but all that does is keep the hot air moving. didn't take them long to get dry and fluffy!

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

I took this pic, And as I was cropping this pic I noticed something didn't look right so I went up and lifted Olivia up and there are 6 out of 8 eggs hatched, and 5 chicks, that one in the top left corner didn't make it. It was wet and smelled. So I removed. Gave them some fresh bedding...

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

I just checked on her and she has hatched more! Thank god, I was thinking about making a run to the feed store to get a couple chicks if it was just going to be the one. I was going to take more pics but she wasn't having it! Maybe later. :jumpy

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

I had to move her from the coop and into a brooder box alone, the fighting over the nest was getting ridicules! And it was safer for any babies, to keep them from falling out of the nest and the coop. And make sure you move them at night.

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

Thank you I had no clue. I usually incubate mine and this hen is 4 years old and has gone broody every year, So I thought I would let her be a mom since she seems to always want to.

Does a Broody know when to stop sitting on eggs that don't hatch?

First time with a broody hen sitting on eggs. One chick hatched this morning and nothing else yet. Will she know when the hatch is over or will I have to pull her eggs if they don't hatch?

Just a cute story about moving a broody hen.

My BA went broody on me so I decided to let her sit on eggs for the first time. She is 4 years old and never hatched out eggs, but she goes broody every summer. I waited until it got dark to move her away from the other hens. I picked her up and my husband gathered her eggs, there should have...

    Lots of small bugs. Mites?

And using pine flakes instead of pasture raising the defeats the purpose of raising you own meat, the cost of the pine and they are not getting to be real chickens if you raise them in a coop.
