I have 2 white silkie hens (about 2 years old) very good broody mommies (broody as I write). They hatched out 6 babies last spring. I also have a beautiful splash roo who will be one in june. He is one of the babies hatched out from eggs I bought to have them lay on last spring. My life just...

Is it possible that 8 week olds will never accept a new addition?

Hi, It's Jennifer. Sorry to hear it is taking time for everyone to get used to him. When I introduced a couple of silkies to my standard flock I seperated them during the day, but made it so everyone could see each other. then, at night I put the 2 girls in a cat cage and had them sleep in...

2 silke girls and one 7wk. old silkie roo *free* Pinckney, MI

I think they would get used to each other. You can search the ins and outs of introducing a new bird to an existing flock on this site. I don't know how different the procedure would be for babies, it probably won't be hard since they are young. I am just giving him away.

2 silke girls and one 7wk. old silkie roo *free* Pinckney, MI

Lisa, The main difference is that silkies are bantams. That means that the rooster would end up being smaller than the full sized chickens that you have already. When I first got my silkies I had the two hens and a rooster. I put them in the same coop with my 12 full sized chickens. They did...

2 silke girls and one 7wk. old silkie roo *free* Pinckney, MI

I have two 1 year old non bearded, white silkie hens to give away. they are sweet girls, very tame and nice. One just hatched her first clutch of eggs in June. I have too many silkies for my coop come winter. I am going to keep 2 or 3 of the new babies, so I need to lighten my silkie load to...

    chicken pop door winter question

It sounds like a good idea to me. If you have the room to do it go for it. It will probably help to keep what ever you throw down on the floor of the coop inside better too. We have a litter board at the bottom of the doors into our coop to keep the pine shavings in.

    First time broody does it!!!

It is one my friend gave me. Her husband made it big enough for their 2 labs to sleep in. I need to make some adjustments to it (like venting and a more secure door), but it works well for silkies. We have 4 hens already and now 6 chicks. My kids begged me to hatch eggs out. We are only...

    First time broody does it!!!

I went out to open up the hen "dog house" and check on the eggs she was on. Today is day 20. At first I was shocked because I saw an empty shell and then I saw the chickie!!! I am so excited it actually worked!!! Now 2 more have hatched and the other 3 have pipped. I just watched one hatch...
